Indonesian leader condemns Saudi maid 'torture'

JAKARTA — Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Tuesday demanded justice for what he described as the "extraordinary torture" of an Indonesian maid in Saudi Arabia.

Sumiati Binti Salan Mustapa, 23, is in a stable condition in a hospital in Medina, where she has been receiving treatment since November 8 for wounds including gashes to her lips and face caused by scissors, officials said.

An angry Yudhoyono said he would dispatch a team to Saudi Arabia to follow up on the case, a day after the Indonesian government summoned the Saudi ambassador to express its deep concern.

"I want to convey the very shocking news about what happened to an Indonesian in Saudi Arabia," Yudhoyono told a cabinet meeting.

"I have instructed the foreign minister to handle it seriously. Sumiati was subjected to extraordinary torture. I want justice to be upheld. I want all-out diplomacy," he said.

Sumiati was allegedly cut with scissors and burned with an iron by her employers, in the latest in a string of abuse cases against Indonesian workers in the Middle East and neighbouring Malaysia.

The young woman from Dompu in West Nusa Tenggara province went to Saudi Arabia four months ago to look for work, joining thousands of Indonesian men and women who do manual labour in the kingdom.

Her treatment has strained relations between the two mainly Muslim countries in the middle of the hajj, Islam's most important pilgrimage when some two million Muslims descend on Saudi Arabia from around the world.

"Yesterday we called the Saudi ambassador to the foreign ministry ... We conveyed our stand and condemned what happened," Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told reporters.

"The Saudi government also condemned it and considered the action to be inappropriate and a violation of humanity. Together, we'll ensure that the party responsible is punished."

Sumiati had suffered "torture of an extraordinary nature" which left her with external and internal injures, he added.

Natalegawa said similar cases of abuse had "happened repeatedly" in Saudi Arabia, and Jakarta wanted to make sure steps were taken to protect Indonesian domestic workers in future.

An Indonesian consulate official in Saudi Arabia was quoted in the Jakarta Globe newspaper as saying the jealous wife of Sumiati's employer was suspected of inflicting the injuries.

"From the picture on her passport Sumiati is pretty. The wife tortured her because of jealousy," the official, Didi Whayudi was quoted as saying.

"The victim was not treated in an Islamic way."

Indonesia's outrage at the abuse of Sumiati stands in contrast to its muted official response to widespread allegations of torture by its own security forces against peaceful political activists and other detainees.

Human rights groups accuse the Indonesian military of killings, murder, torture and abuse of Papua's ethnic Melanesian majority and separatists in the Maluku islands.

In the latest incident, soldiers were caught on video torturing Papuan civilians earlier this year but no one has been held responsible.

Long time ago I remember some Indonesian, filipino maids used to wish so badly that they work for a Somali family knowing that they would be treated humanely! Most of the somali families in Arab countries are Reer Waqooyi and they treat maids so nicely and humanely and never oppress them! But these scoundrels are something else really

If the roles were reversed and Saudi Arabia was at civil war, they would have done unimaginable things to eachother, just look at Lebanon, not too long ago they were animals. For fokk sake, the Americans have to send detainees to Arabs to get tortured professionally.

Man your argument wont hold credence simply because a country in civil war cannot be compared to one without! How about we compare Lebanon in civil war and Somalia in civil war and see the big difference.

If we analyse Lebanon it was just war crime after war crime in every single city! Women were raped, mass killings etc.

Whilst Somalia, the war crimes were reduced mainly to one area i.e Mogadishu. If we analyse the civil war in the North (Somaliland), the fighting was brutal and there was a lot of execution of prisoners, but no woman was raped, nobody was systematically tortured. Even the SNM when they captured soldiers of Siad Barre, they were either executed or kept in confinement. No torture. If we go back to Mogadishu it is very clear that inhumane things occured there during the civil war however it was a walk in the park compared to what Lebanese, Egyptian, Iraqi civilians went through!

This is something of a natural phenomenon in Arab countries. I can confidently say that over 80% of Gulf Arab families mistreat their maids and perhaps 50% of those are tortured routinely. Sxb it has nothing to do with savagery of war. It is a cultural issue/problem. These Ayrabs really assume that they are better than those whom they are responsible for looking after. As a human rights advocate myself, I am not myself expecting them to be angels but sadistic behaviour such as this is intolerable whereas in a country raging in civil war is completely different. A country in civil war is EXPECTED to commit inhumane acts, has any of this ever happened in pre-war Somalia? Go ask your family!

Somali families in these countries are a testament to how refined and humane they are! Im not saying Somalis are perfect creatures, they lack many things but one thing I will not be convinced of is that Somalis are sadistic. Maybe reer Xamar are but not those who come from my region!
