If i had the money and choice i would not go for a T-55 or even a T-72.
Sure they can withstand most of the firepower thrown at them, but they cannot withstand first generation Anti tank missles like the saggar and spigot and Milan. Chinese and North Korean Knock offs are still available for next to nothing like $1000 a pop.
each of these $1000 could take out a tank or armoured vehicle..

If i had the choice i would go for allot of Toyota trucks, allot of anti tank missles like TOW (also available on the world market from Chinese, Korean, Iranian and Pakistani factories). 22 to 30mm anti aircraft guns mounted on trucks (technicals).
and some BMP-1's for close in assaults...
