This is such a bizarre story. Its a story about greed, and how it can change people in an instant. There was this waffle diner place in alabama, where a regular customer, a man who had recently had a stroke, and was limping would drive all the way to florida to buy lottery tickets and tip the ticket to all waitresses in the diner. His only request was if one of them won, they would all share the money and buy him a new truck. So he would basically buy a bunch of tickets, some for himself, his family and five tickets for the five waitresses. The waitress verbally agree if one of them wins, they share the money and of course buy the man a new truck. What do u know-one of them won. Tonya Dickenson, a fat, over-tanned mean woman won the winning ticket. 10 million dollars. She calls in sick, and says she won----she claimed she and her husband bought it over the weekend. The other waitresses were suspicious of course, so they asked her the sequence number of her tickets, since the man had bought five ticket at once, and the tickets would all have chronicle sequence numbering.-- she wouldn't say. The four waitresses file a law suit.
After many witnesses and case digging, it looked like tonya could win--so they tell tonya to make a deal. Let her keep 40% of the win-that means 4 millions and give the rest to the waitresses. Tonya refuses. Finally, the jury believe a last minute elderly witnesses who confirm tonya had told them she will share the win, if she had won--as part of a verbal deal. Jury awards --2 million to each waitresses. End of case? No---Tonya files appeal, knowing she could loose everything, with the mountain of lawyer fees and yearly interest.
Case goes to alabama supreme court--where the court determines that a verbal agreement was made-- and proven in the court of law----BUt........
Since it is illegal to gamble in alabama----whatever verbal contract or agreement made in alabama was void--under alabama law.
Tonya dickenson----keeps the full 10 million to herself. This was in 2000.
In 2001----Tonya made the headlines again--her husband kidnapped her--they were having domestic abuse problems-- and in 2003 tonya was broke---filed chapter 13--- and is now working as a waitress in a diner not far from the original diner.
Is karma a bleep?
