I think they are good. What book are you reading now? Is there anything you recommend? I'm reading The Ideal Muslimah at the moment. It's really good.

I don't think it's bad to be ideal, we need to have something to live up to. That's how I see it. I've been accused of being idealistic more times than I can remember. People told me you're just setting yourself up to be hurt etc.. and I did get hurt more times than I can remember..but each time, I learnt something new...and I can say it was worth the pain.

I was looking back at my school work couple of days ago..and there was this project I did on Islam. What Muslims believe..etc. I was 12 at the time. I wrote in my conclusion..how people should believe whatever they want to believe. Nobody should be treated badly for what they believe in. I also wrote some people are gay and I find that weird..at the time that's what I was taught at home. It wasnt my thinking..it was something I was taught. I didnt even know why I was told they are weird..I was never given a reason. That's one thing we need to change in our community. Teach children right from wrong..but give them reasons..explain to them. We underestimate children so much, they understand more than we think. Okay, what I'm getting at is...we are all idealistic in some way..we're born to appreciate all things and see all things beautiful. But as we grow up, the more we see, and the more we experience, we start seeing things for what they are instead of what they could be.

The Book of Assistance by Imam Al Hadad. Most of Imam al Hadad's books are short and concise treaties, that don't delve into things that are debated about or lead to sedition. I like them because they're easy to understand and make you believe that his advice is applicable though it may take time and effort. He suggests to do things little by little with the intention of continuing it before adding anything that is burdensome. Also, he is among the scholars that advocate to the sufi way, and increasing in Gnostic knowledge. I would recommend it to someone who wishes to apply the sunnah first to themselves in a moderate and realistic way.

Yeah I get what you mean by idealism. Also, I get what you mean by understanding why you hold a certain view. I have been on the mindset to evaluate what I believe and why, and to live in a deliberate way instead of someone traveling in the dark in the heart of a forest. At the same time, with certain aspects I cannot lie but I have been reluctant to examine deeply for fear that I may become even more shaky in my faith. I know my Iman is little when it can become shaky because of the smallest of doubts istaqfurrallah. Insha'Allah I will strive to defend my Imaan and strengthened it. I believe that is the reason I have endeavored in seeking religious knowledge. I have recently started fard cayn lessons with my Imaam and shaykh at my masjid, and we are going over safiinata al Najaa and then he promised me we would learn deeper insha'allah.

I can't explain everything I feel, or the way my mindset is exactly at the moment. But all I can say is that I am entering a whirlwind within myself. And atleast how well I come out clear sighted totally relies on Allah swt.

Check out "purification of the soul" by Jamaal Zarabozo. Very thorough book.

I’m just getting into it but it is a very interesting book. It is about the concept, process and means of purifying the soul. It doesn't stray from the Qur'an and Sunnah and is very straightforward and understandable. It even evaluates and critiques other approaches to purifying the soul like in Hinduism/Buddhism, Christianity and Judaism. It also has a chapter on Sufism. It is very thorough, 500 pages, check it out.

For things of purification Imam Ghazali is top of the chart.
Nevertheless, there is benefit in other books so long as they are in line with the Sunnah. I'll keep him in mind bro.l
