Ethiopia Relocates 150,000 People in Ogaden in five months

Post by Coeus »

The Ethiopian government has relocated about 150,000 people in the eastern Somali region to more fertile areas in the past five months, the Minister for Federal Affairs said.

Scattered households have been brought together into villages to raise their “quality of life,” Shiferaw Teklemariam said in an interview today in the capital, Addis Ababa.

In the next seven months, another 70,000 households, or 350,000 people, will move into “communes” in the arid region, Shiferaw said. Similar programs are taking place in other states. About 45,000 households will be moved in Gambella, almost three-quarters of the population; 45,000 in Benishangul Gumuz; and 50,000 to 80,000 in the Afar region.

“It’s a very ambitious program,” Shiferaw said. “We don’t want anyone to be left behind” as the government targets economic growth of between 11 percent and 14.9 percent, he said.

The projects in the western Gambella and Benishangul Gumuz regions are three-year schemes to improve service provision, while the one-year programs in the Afar and Somali regions are primarily to resettle people in less arid areas near the Wabe Shebelle and Awash rivers, Shiferaw said.

The policy in Somali region was not designed to assist the government’s campaign against ethnic Somali rebels, although “it may help in the long run,” Shiferaw said. Neither is it related to the national plan to lease 3 million hectares (7.4 million acres) of “untouched” land for large-scale agriculture over the next 5 years, he said.

“Some people think the communes are to clear land to give to someone else, but this is not the case,” he said. “We have excess land for investors.”

People won’t be forced to move and have the right to return home, Shiferaw said. The government will not claim their old plots for at least two years.

He is trying to destroy the purpose of ONLF, if all somali is gone from Ogaden, then there is only replaced ethiopians left in Ogaden and ONLF. Then its more easy for him to claim ogande and call OMLF terrorists

There are somali representatives in the government and if somalis are being relocated deeper into ethiopia in land no previously owned by somalis than that is expansion. The trick is the 2 year rule, after two years the old plots will become government propoerty and may be used for government bases and projects.

Nothing Ethiopia does is good business, only selfish business.

Ethiopia's only concerns are accessible ports and removing as much population out of their way to have easier access to ports. Ports with which to link pipe lines from the Ogadeen Natural reserves of oil and Gas.

The Arid lands are the mineral rich lands and after 2 years the government will have th right to extract without obstacle.

They did the same thing to lowland eastern hararghe oromos about 10 years ago. Turned out tho, they hated the land they were sent to and shortly after returned back to their land.

I dont get the storyy but its maybe they are relocating folks from the arid areas of Godey region to the fertile areas of the Shabelle river.

I dont think ONLF or the locals will tolerates midgets among them 8-) 8-) 8-)

Also I do beleive somalis prefer warmer areas to chilly fertile lands  8-)

^Oh i just skimming through didnt really read it. I thought they were trying to relocate somalis in the somali region to western Ethiopia but looks like there trying to just move them to greener areas in their own state boundaries.

If Tplf succeeds with this plan, it will
i) exacerbate competition among somali clans
ii) make control of population easier as they will be settled

It will be interesting to see how ONLF will cope with it.

there was actually a plan to settle abeshas in Godey region and the locals were all on stand by mode.

I guess this is not Mingestu Era and if any abesha is settled in Godey then there will be fireworks.

Its seems more like moving one somali clan into another clans land
I think its devilish plan seen intra-somali competition.

I wouldnt take this move easily

Yeah but you know the thing is complex no body will allow another clan just to come in and settle in their prime land while they are marginalised.

But still my suspicions are high and there is a high probability they are abeshas.

Only Somalis thal leave in the riverine areas engage in agriculture the rest are pastrolists and spend their past time fighting over trivial inter tribal warfare.
