Dream come true or Dream-gate? Jubilant scenes of joy and scandal hits Somalia after a “dream” of an ancient figure can cause a deadly present.
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Jubilant Somalis of the sufi sect cheered and sang as Mudane Khaalif’s dream of his ancient forefather legitimatising Ahlu Sunnah caused both joy and uproar in the country - WiKiLeaks
But the jubilation may be short lived as members of the Darood clan in the Al Shabab movement has accused Mudane Khaalif of stealing the legacy of Sheikh Darood for petty political gain.
The Islamic movement Al Shabab has pledged to fight on from the southern half of the country. Many in overwhelmingly Muslim Somalia are skeptical of the dreams.
"This is pure fabrication in its highest form," Mudane Abdisamad declared after a meeting with Ina Godane, Abu Xamarawi and others. “Khaalif is a Sufi of the highest order. Its strange that as soon as he got access to Aabe Siyaad’s saving account he has a dream of Sheikh Darood.”
He later said that Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’a was seeking nationwide approval to impose their version of Sufi Islam to the country.
The two Islamist forces both set up in after the ICU took over Mogadishu is riddled with clan rivalries and rival Islamic ideologies, most notably between Khaalif, HutuKing and Abdisamad.
"Al Shabab killers and terrorists are more dangerous than a Boon’s dream”, Mogadishu resident HutuKing told The Associated Press. "The Al Shabab terrorists have no broad support in the capita, they have left the Jama’a and their blood is permissible according to the Shara’h."
A chilling reminder of the chaos Somalia has known came as armed militiamen began looting almost anything they could after the Islamic forces left. At least four people were killed in the melee, said witness HutuKing who is widely suspected of orchestrating the looting himself.
President Shariif, whose government has spent a year in anarrow corner of Mogaidshu, said Thursday that his troops were not a threat to the people of Mogadishu.
"The government is committed to solving every problem that may face Somalia through dialogue and peaceful ways," his statement said.
President of the self declared independent country of Somaliland Siilaanyo vowed to retaliate against the public decleration of the dream and has inaugurated a team of experts to help prominent Isaaq tribesmen to have dreams of their own about Shaykh Isaaq.
"We also have many Somaliland citizens who’ve had dreams of Sheikh Isaaq," the President said, predicting it would add legitimacy to Somaliland’s case for recognition.
Speaking in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, Siilanyo brang a case of one man endowed with knowledge of the secret arts, witch-craft and the narcotics drug qaat.
“He has a white beard, white garment and a blue bag for his qaad” replied, Cali gaab after persisting questions about his nightly visions of Sheikh Isaaq. “He told me that a Habar Je’lo clan member would bring recognition”.
Many sceptics have commented on how these dreams are fiction based rather than fact in a country steeped in oral legacies and qaat related insanity which is predominant in Somaliland.
Somalia's clans have been the basis of politics and identity here for centuries. But due to clan fighting, the country has not had an effective government since 1991, when clan-based warlords overthrew a dictator and then turned on one another.
