Wikileaks reveal Egypt´s Fear over Nile water
A leaked US embassy cable has revealed Egypt's fears about the possibility of its neighbour Sudan breaking into two.
In the cable, written last year, a foreign ministry official urged the US to help postpone a referendum on independence for Southern Sudan.
The official said the creation of "a non-viable state" could threaten Egypt's access to the River Nile.
Cairo's Almasry Alyoum newspaper published the cable, one of thousands being released by Wikileaks.
Southern Sudan is due to vote in a referendum on independence in January.
But in the cable - from the US embassy in Cairo - the official talks of implications should south Sudan secede and concern is expressed about the River Nile - a lifeline for Egypt.
Egypt has in the past threatened to go to war with any country tampering with the Nile.
The official said the creation of "a non-viable state" could threaten Egypt's access to the Nile at a time when several countries are negotiating how to share the river's water.
The official presses the US to help postpone the referendum by four to six years.
Egypt clearly fears a new nation, Southern Sudan, would be more likely to side with the upstream countries of the Nile basin like Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.
Vital resource
Those countries believe a colonial era treaty which guarantees that Egypt receives most of the Nile water is unfair.
Egypt and Sudan are refusing to sign up to a new agreement.
The fact that south Sudan is oil rich is seen as a major reason for tension ahead of the referendum on independence.
However, some argue that the vital water resource is likely to be a far greater bone of contention in the region long after the oil wells have dried up.
Wikileaks has so far released more than 600 of 251,000 classified US diplomatic and military cables.

Re: Wikileaks reveal Egypt´s Fear over Nile water
Let’s also not forget wikileaks reported that Egypt is planning to obtain nuclear weapons if Iran does. If that true, Ethiopia will not dare touch the Nile

If that is true then all of East Africa is screwed and we may also have to obtain nuclear to defend ourselves. The arabs will do everyhting to have the water and using nukes may cross their minds. Dont for a second think that this wont affect Somalia. If this scenario ever becomes reality, then we have to distance ourselves from the arabs. The amount of refugees, casualties and devastation to Ethiopian soil will never be normal again.

Wow so there already at it. I hope its just rumours. But even if it is true. Then the fact that Somalia has one of the largest uranium reserves in the world is a positive thingOxidant wrote:Interesting times ahead,Coeus wrote:If that is true then all of East Africa is screwed and we may also have to obtain nuclear to defend ourselves. The arabs will do everyhting to have the water and using nukes may cross their minds. By rumors and report, Egypt might already have enriched uranium to make a weapon,

And Iran tried to steal them from us when we had the Islamic court union in Somalia 2006. They disguised themselves as fellow muslims just to try take the uranium from us, so they can make nukes.According to surveys, uranium is also found in large quantities in the Buurhakaba region. A Brazilian company in the 1980s had invested $300 million for a uranium mine in central Somalia, but no long-term mining took place.[21]
Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... malia.htmlIran tried to obtain uranium from Somalia in return for supplying weapons to the anarchic country's Islamist movement, the United Nations said yesterday.

Why do you care if Ethiopia uses the nile, Egypt wants Somali people to forever keep Ethiopia unsettled because a developing Ethiopian nation means using the Nile and Egyptians don't want that.Oxidant wrote:Let’s also not forget wikileaks reported that Egypt is planning to obtain nuclear weapons if Iran does. Regardless of religion the xabashi is closer to you and on top of all that you accept being a pawn for Egypt, I hope Ethiopia uses the Nile to its utmost ability.

Re: Wikileaks reveal Egypt´s Fear over Nile water
Ethiopia and Egypt going to war over the Nile is bless in disguise for Somalia... Egypt should directly approach Ethiopia on the matter, I'm sick and tired of them using Somalia as a scapegoat.
Re: Wikileaks reveal Egypt´s Fear over Nile water
It’s a double edged sword, a stronger Ethiopia using the Nile means a weaker Somalia. You cannot have a strong Somalia and strong Ethiopia. Ethiopia needs access to the sea and Somalis will never let go of the Ogaden issues. Therefore in our long term interest, we should side with Egypt and Arabia, not those Christian Ethiopians who have killed thousands of Muslims under their rule and oppressed them for decadesSamatr wrote:Why do you care if Ethiopia uses the nile, Egypt wants Somali people to forever keep Ethiopia unsettled because a developing Ethiopian nation means using the Nile and Egyptians don't want that.Oxidant wrote:Let’s also not forget wikileaks reported that Egypt is planning to obtain nuclear weapons if Iran does. Hopefully, Egypt obtains nuclear weapons as a deterrent to anyone touching their historical right to the Nile

Somalia is a muslim country and a member of Arab league. However the last 20 years has shown us that our Arab friends like to take stabs in the back. Some of them even contrbiuted to our fall.
Ethiopia sees Somalia as a natural arab ally, like sudan. But if we convince the Ethiopians that Somalia will support them in exchange for some deals, then they will surely take that offer fast. Providing that we still have the access to the Sea and can be a friend in the region where Ethiopia has so many enemies.
Somali water companies can make good deals with ethiopia, so that the fresh water from the nile source is being bought by somalis. We could get better deals then the indians in this issue. We can also make some deals regarding ogaden and how ONLF shouldnt be classified as terrorists and so on. In exchange we screw the arabs and shock them.

They wouldn't die instantly, thus said Nuking Ethiopia will be much more devastating in the long run. Since Egypt has underground water storage's and looker at desalinizationMonsieur wrote:tHE EGYPTIANS WILL BE DEAD OF THIRST AND POISON BEFORE THEY TRY BOMBING ANYTHING![]()
