Breaking news: Somalia claims Socotra island!

Post by Coeus »

Yemen Post

Somalia has claimed that the islands of Yemeni Socotra Archipelago are part of it, requesting the United Nations to determine the status of the archipelago, executive director of the Saba Center for Strategic Studies said.

The unstable horn of Africa country with a transitional government receiving unlimited support from Yemen said it has the right to administer the archipelago, which lies about 340 km from the Yemeni coast, because it is located within its territory and borders, Ahmed Abdul Karim Saif made clear.

'The Somali claim is an unprecedented and dangerous indicator at a time when local activists and organizations are demanding to give Socotra a suitable status according to its geopolitical and strategic location, boost all services on it and take all necessary measures to keep other countries away from thinking of any part of Yemen.'

In response, Yemen submitted a request to the UN saying the archipelago is Yemeni and history and its influence on it prove its claim, he said.

Yemen's response came late and helped prevent a dispute over the archipelago, said Saif, as he ruled out that Socotra is currently a matter of dispute between the two countries.

The remarks were given at a seminar on Socotra, at which the participants voiced concerns about the situation of the archipelago amid poor basic services and infrastructure.

They said the current situation in Socotra could lead to unacceptable security, military and economic consequences that may hamper preparing the investment climate on it and its development as Yemen is seeking to better use its potentials.

Moreover, they urged the government to address all issues affecting the interest of the Socotra people and their traditions.

It is not within Somalia’s 370 km water, it's Somalis land. Like I said before, we should follow Eritrea's lead, shoot first and ask much later :up:

Pack a bunch of hawyie into an armada of motorized boats and invade the Island. The Yemenis will flee like the rest of us when the animals make land fall.

I think this is a great move by TFG. While Somalia has the best support it has ever had in the last 20 years. We should fight Al shabab, and also claim the islands that is ours. This will halt the process for Yemen to try anything stupid while Somalia is fighting Al shabab. The UN hopefully will support Somalia in this.

IDIOTS

Soqotri people are ancient Semitic people much closer to modern day Yemenis than to Cushitic Somalis.

Somalis have no cultural ties to Socotra at all.

According to wikipedia the ethnicites that live there:

predominantly Arab; but also Afro-Arab, South Asian, Somali and European

Somalis easily could have been evicted.

Scientific proof that they are closer to Yemenis:

Out of Arabia—The settlement of Island Soqotra as revealed by mitochondrial and Y chromosome genetic diversity

The Soqotra archipelago is one of the most isolated landmasses in the world, situated at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden between the Horn of Africa and southern Arabia. The main island of Soqotra lies not far from the proposed southern migration route of anatomically modern humans out of Africa ∼60,000 years ago (kya), suggesting the island may harbor traces of that first dispersal. Nothing is known about the timing and origin of the first Soqotri settlers. The oldest historical visitors to the island in the 15th century reported only the presence of an ancient population. We collected samples throughout the island and analyzed mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosomal variation. We found little African influence among the indigenous people of the island. Although the island population likely experienced founder effects, links to the Arabian Peninsula or southwestern Asia can still be found. In comparison with datasets from neighboring regions, the Soqotri population shows evidence of long-term isolation and autochthonous evolution of several mitochondrial haplogroups. Specifically, we identified two high-frequency founder lineages that have not been detected in any other populations and classified them as a new R0a1a1 subclade. Recent expansion of the novel lineages is consistent with a Holocene settlement of the island ∼6 kya. Am J Phys Anthropol, 2009. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Socotris = Semitic

Somalis = Cushitic

Nothing in common, Socotra belongs to Yemen.

Who the hell cares? This is within Somali territory. The island has split of Somalia a long time ago obviously.

Letting yemen have it is dangerous, they could easily use it as a army base in the future. And we would be in trouble!

Rumors already say that Socotra is military base:
Russia is to set up a military base on Socotra Island but the timing for the establishment of the base has not been identified yet, Russian military officials have said.
