Marabout and his patients, Mirriah , Niger. He is traditional muslim healer, and helps not only with your health problems, but for example with success in business, as is the case with man in green writing in the back. You have to describe your problem and marabout will prepare a set of spells and write them down with suitable verses from Koran on a wooden board, which gets washed afterwards and the patient is given the dirty water with ink to drink  . There is many marabouts like this in Mirriah, town in eastern Niger, where islam had to incorporate traditional practices in order to gain popularity. Now there is modernity as well, with marabout staying in touch with his customers by mobile phone

You have to know the culture and the way they use words. Sixir is more better translated as "black magic", while spell in english denotes anything that one does a special ritual that has an abnormal affect. Like reading quran on tahlil in their understanding is seen as a spell.

I can't make any judgements to this if it is wrong or not.

The more I think of the muslim world the more I realize that Somalia is one of the few better off countries religiously. We are mostl shafii/salafi/sane suffis . Sixir and shrik is reletively amateurish amongst the somali people as compared to most other muslims. We have no shia and the qabooris are on a major decline. Now if only we stopped tribal wars.

How is this any different from the Sheiks who read Koranic verses and then spit on you? Let's not be too quick to judge, lest we be judged ourselves.

Interesting. Very interesting stuff.

Those of you who want to destroy the qaboors, you have no justification for that

Somali's have tahliils. Is that too much different from this? What are the origins of tahliils anyways, I just always assumed it was part of Islam, now I'm not sure if its something made up or not.
