Peacekeepers' tank rams Shabelle radio station in Mogadishu

A tank driven by African Union peacekeepers rammed into the building occupied by an independent local radio station in Mogadishu, witnesses said Monday.

The incident happened as an AMISOM convoy was traveling near the station operated by Shabelle Media Network.

The tank deliberately destroyed one side of the building, claimed Ahmed Adow Anshur, a Shabelle reporter.

“Local residents got together around the Shabelle compound and [were] surprised at what AU forces had done on the building,” Anshur added.

He said the convoy left the scene without apologizing for the incident.

On Dec. 10, Reporters Without Borders awarded Shabelle the 2010 Press Freedom Prize.
