Say, YES to STEM CELLS research please.

Post by Basra- »

A german HIV patient has been cured of HIV. A stell cell procedure was done where, the patient was insert with cells that appear immuned to hiv infection. These super cells are found in few select cocasian, whose ancestors have survived the black plague during the 15th century. It appears, the ancestors of the survivers carry this supper amazing cells. The patient, an american living in Germany is free from HIV today.

Also, another breaking news in the same breath---balding can be cured by this very same stell cell insertion of forlicle of people with health none bald cells. Its amazing wallle.

Basra I thought you were a proponent of Population control? Isn't HIV one of the primary causes of death in the developing world specifically Africa? A continent where the majority of its inhabitants you so despise?

Basra this is completely contradictory to your stance!

Your claims are a bit misleading, Basra.
But these were no ordinary stem cells – a mutation found in just one percent of Caucasians in northern and western Europe causes CD4 cells to lack the CCR5 receptor, a receptor necessary for early-stage HIV to infect CD4 immune system cells. People with this mutation are more or less immune to HIV infection.

Those anti-HIV stem cells took root in the Berlin patient and repopulated there. At the same time, the host CD4 cells that hadn’t been destroyed in chemotherapy and radiation completely disappeared. After 38 months, doctors still couldn’t find HIV infection in the Berlin patient – in other words, it seems by all measures that his HIV has been cured.
If a miracle existed in the scientific realm, this would be it. Dude was just a lucky sob.

Half

how was i misleading? Anyway, this patient is lucky for sure. It was purely a fluke experiment. It all started with scientist community realization that there is a few populations whom are resistant to the hiv fast progression. So what they basically did was ---implant this none hiv receptors cells to see what happens. :o Now, according to what u quoted above--when they say--the host CD4 that were not destroyed from chemotherapy disappeared because, the body realizes it doesnt need these super defender cells. Essentially, this a break through. So basically--i need to locate these european cocasians who have this none hiv receptor cells and extract these cells --sell them-- and make me a rich habar yonis business woman. What do u say?

here is more news Half.

"A man with HIV living in Germany may have been cured of his infection by a bone marrow transplant, researchers claim.
In the transplant, the patient received bone marrow, which contains blood stem cells, from a donor with a rare mutation. The mutation essentially prevents the most common form of HIV from getting inside certain immune cells, called T CD4 cells, and wreaking havoc on the immune system. Afterward, the virus appeared to stop replicating in the patient's body, and he no longer needed HIV antiretroviral medication."

By misleading I meant your attempt at claiming stem cells are so miraculous as to even cure HIV patients is inaccurate. What you have presented and I did read about this earlier is a combination of many different factors. You have a leukemia patient who underwent streneous chemotherapy, was taking strong immunosuppressives at some point, had a bone marrow transplant with mutated stem cells that are present in only 1% of caucasians - a mutated stem cell that had the CD4 cells, but lacked the receptors that the HIV virus seeks as its host. So, essentially his CD4 cells are impervious to the HIV virus, thus why he is supposedly cured. But, take out a few of all these different factors and nobody can conclusively say that it was the stem cells alone that caused the receptors to be mutated and impervious, it could also be the chemo or even a combination that cured him.

Its all preliminary stuff anyway. We'll see in due time what is achievable. Not entirely too familiar with the religious ruling regarding this phenomenon, but I for one would like to see more research in to stem cells - simply because its potentials are too great to miss out on.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Half

I didnt mean---Stem cells research the controversial one, where you have to invade embros to develop cells. I meant just extracting cells from those hiv few who have super good cells.

""A man with HIV living in Germany may have been cured of his infection by a bone marrow transplant, researchers claim.

Half i think u might have not grasped the really essential break-through here. # 1 this study show that a bone morrow transplant from the elite people who have special HIV resistant tcells can help hiv patients fight hiv or possibly cure it.

The scientist have declared --the patient having zero detectable virus in his system. But the lingering question or concern for the scientist is: Is the virus lying something within--in dormat form? Can the hiv concetration begin to mutate and attack again? What is the definition of cure? The difference between a HIV positive person and HIV negative person--is the presence of anti bodies that are formed in body naturally when one is infected. Now i am sure--the anti bodies will always be in the system once made. But the only way the scientist have said the patient is cured, is the virus is not attacking the healthy cd4 cells.

I think---a cure has been found.

It may or may not be plausible in the long run. Embryonic stem cells usually offer more options towards these sort of conditions because they are in the miotic phase and before cell differentiation or specialization occurs. Adult stem cells as in your example are mostly for replenishing specialized cells. In fact, adult stem cell use in bone marrow transplants is not something new, it has been around for years. The only concern would be the arduous task of tracking down the tiny percentage of caucasians with the CD4 mutated cell and then doing a bone marrow transplant of their mutated t cells to HIV patients. There has to be in place a system of sorting them out somehow, which can be a nightmare. In addition, these scientists have to run a lot of experiments involving chemo patients who have had this particular type of stem cell bone marrow transplant. Its a process of elimination, because now as things stand - its not accurately clear what had caused this unexpected effect in this infected patient.

Nevertheless, I would love to be around to see a day when stem cells both adult and embryonic have thoroughly been researched and used. I'm more interested in seeing how embryonic stem cells will be used in the fight against alzheimer's disease as a hippocampus replenishing procedure.

Half Dazed,

In order to do stem cell research do their need to be abortions? That's the idea that I get from NHG's response. I'm not too familiar with the subject

its predictable and typical of u to be concerned about alzheimer. So selfish and typical of u.

If ever i have concern for the embronic researche to be zelously persued, i would say--it should be for the benefit of spinal cord injuries. Spinal cord paralysis is horrible and horrendous. That should be # 1 priority. Alzheimer should be last. Who cares if u get old, loose your senses. old Age is old age.

However, i am still conflicted as to the religion aspect of it. Its not ethically correct. Unless- we take advantage of women who naturally have miscarriages-- which happens alot if ask me. then they can hurry up and get the miscarriage fetus and do it. I am against getting purposely pregnant to extra embryos.

there are a lot of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are the most controversial but this study used adult stem cells. There are also stem cells extracted from birth fuilds....etc..

Btw... I support all stem cells, even embryonic ones. A baby is not a baby before its a baby.... get it? its just a bunch of cells so there is no life to take away. Even in hadith it says it takes 40 days.

No, there's no abortion involved in stem cells. These embryos are the result of IVF i.e. test tube babies, conceieved in laboratories from a donated egg and sperm. Stem cells can either come from embryos before they become fetus or from adults either from their blood cells or other types of cells.

Embryonic stem cells are very sought after because of their pluripotent functionality. Which basically means their ability to become any sort of cell, anywhere in the body, during the miotic phase. These cells are seperated from the actual embryo in the lab and are then further exploited to yield desired characteristics. In cases of someone with spinal column injury, these sort of cells have the ability to regenerate in the spine and cause a sprout of life again, specially nerves that have been destroyed or lost.

As long as an embryo isn't 40 days old, I don't see the ethics issue with stem cells. But, scientists also tap in to fetuses around 8 weeks old and also take out their pluripotent cells. This is where it gets very murky, because by then the fetus is a living being. Allahu aclam.
