Yesterday at approximately 1800 hrs, an AMISOM tank, returning to AMISOM Headquarters for routine servicing, accidentally rammed into the perimeter wall surrounding the headquarters of the award winning Radio Shabelle in Mogadishu. Following the incident, and in accordance with AMISOM regulations, the tank and AMISOM soldiers left the scene and immediately reported the incident to the commanding officer.
Initial reports indicate that this was nothing more than a common road accident but AMISOM is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
A team has today been deployed to the site of the incident to make an assessment of the damage caused for the purpose of making good the damage. AMISOM sincerely apologizes to the management of Radio Shabelle for the accident and assures all residents of Mogadishu of its continuing commitment to respecting the rights and property of all.
AMISOM spokesman, Major BB said: "This is one of those embarrassing moments that happens in these situations. Thankfully nobody was hurt or injured and AMISOM will have the perimeter repaired as quickly as possible so that the security around such an important and valued radio station is restored.
"AMISOM remains a fierce protector of an independent media in Mogadishu and Somalia and the media in Mogadishu know that we are right behind them."
Separately, AMISOM forces on Tuesday afternoon offered Shabelle administration military barriers, putting it around the broken perimeter of Radio building.
