FEMALE ORDERED TO WEAR SKIRTS & FLESH-COLOURED UNDERWEAR

No sexiness in the city: Female staff ordered to wear loose-fitting skirts and flesh-coloured underwear by UBS
By Ian Sparks and Luke Salkeld
16th December 2010

For women no 'flashy jewellery or skirts that are too tight behind' allowed
Men are banned from wearing 'loud socks'

It’s one way to take the sexiness out of the City.

Staff at one of the world’s top investment banks have been issued with a 43-page dress code specifying in minute detail what they can and can’t wear – and it’s bad news for fans of tight skirts or lacy black bras.

The guidance from Swiss firm UBS warns women to wear flesh-coloured underwear, and avoid flashy jewellery and coloured artificial nails. Men are told choose ties with patterns that ‘match the bone structure of the face’.

Under the rules for women, it states: 'You should not wear flashy jewellery or skirts that are too tight behind.
'Underwear must not be visible against clothing or spilling out of clothing. Rather, they should be flesh-coloured under white shirts.'
It adds: 'Women should not wear shoes that are too tight-fitting as there is nothing worse than a strained smile.
'Tattoos, piercings and ankle-chains are not desirable and do not give an impression of professionalism.
'Employees should also ensure that natural roots are not showing if they have coloured their hair, and not wear fancy and coloured artificial fingernails.'
For men it states: 'You should wear a straight-cut two button jacket and trousers that make up part of a classic professional suit.
'Wear only ties that match the bone structure of the face and do not wear socks with cartoon motifs.

'Three days of stubble is not permitted and a visit to the barber is recommended once every four weeks.'
Employees of both sexes are also urged to ‘avoid smelling of strong scent, garlic, onion and cigarette smoke’.
The move is part of a bid to improve the image of UBS, which suffered after it accepted a £37billion bailout – Europe’s biggest – in the 2008 financial crisis.
Earlier this year business banking officer Debrahlee Lorenzana, 33, launched a legal action against UBS’s rival Citibank after claiming she was sacked by the firm for wearing clothes that were too sexy.
The bank is trying to rebuild its image after receiving a multi-billion dollar bailout in the wake of the global financial crisis.
A UBS spokesman said clients and staff had reacted well to the rules, which are being applied at five offices in Switzerland.
It said in a statement: 'The reputation of UBS makes up our most precious asset.

'So adopting irreproachable behaviour implies having an impeccable presentation.'
Swiss precision applied to a dress code for bankers Just right: But if she sits down, Swiss Bank wants those buttons undone
For women: 'A flawless appearance can bring inner peace and a sense of security.'

'Jacket buttons should be closed. When seated, they must always be open.'

'Only when it is very hot, and after confirmation of your supervisor, can you wear the shirt without a jacket.'

'While blazers are equipped with pockets, they were not designed to contain a large number of personal effects or accessories. Leave these empty, so they do not deform.'

'The jacket should be closed when you stand or you're traveling.'

'The shoulders should have natural proportions: if the shoulders are too broad you will appear too big with a too-small head.'

'Conversely, too narrow shoulders could make your head look excessively large.''The jacket must completely cover your posterior.'

'Ultra-trendy eyewear or too showy colored glasses are not tolerated. Ultra-hip glasses or lenses in too gaudy colours are not allowed.'

'Sunglasses cannot be worn on top of the head.'

'The ideal time to apply perfume is directly after you take a hot shower, when your pores are still open.'

'In addition, your skin should not be dry. Therefore, you should always first apply body lotion to your skin.'

'Piercings, besides earrings, and tattoos are prohibited. Tattoos, piercings or anklets are outdated and do not look professional.'

'You can wear a watch to the extent it does not threaten not safety.'

'Our body odour can not be changed. However, we can ensure that it produces only pleasant scents. Strong breath (garlic, onions, cigarettes) can have a significant impact on communication. It is nevertheless possible to fight bad breath - during the week avoid dishes made with garlic and onions.'
... and for the men'If you wear a watch, it suggests reliability and that punctuality is of great concern to you.'

'An appropriate remedy to prolong the life of shoes is to replace heels early. Always put on your shoes with the help of a shoehorn. Completely unlace your shoes after use. After having worn a pair of shoes, allow your shoes at least one day, so let the leather dry out and rest.'

'Each time you remove your suit, untie your tie and hang or wrap it. Give your tie at least one rest day before reuse. The tip of your tie should under no circumstances enter your pants.'

'Underwear is among the most intimate parts of our clothing... Your underwear must not be visible through your clothes, or stand out... Your figure should not suffer from the way you wear your underwear.'

'Do not wash, nor ever iron your shirts yourself.'
