English is a very difficult Language
Take for example the vowels (a, e, i, o, u); each can sound totally different in many words, and also can be longer vowel in many words. There's no uniform or logical way of reading them. For example, the i in Michael is different from the one in miracle. How is one supposed to correctly read it, unless one memorises how to read every English word? And how about the o in hot? Is sounds a. Check the long vowels in following names:
Redford (there's one o, but you read it like oo)
Daniel (one a, but to be read like aa)
Olivia (the o reads like a, first i reads like ii, second i normal)
Check the strange pronunciation of the u in this name:
Urquhart (the first u is read like e; can you believe that? The whole name is read like Erkart.)
These are my initial findings, but have others (including grammatical) which I will add (you can add yours).
Discuss.

Its not that bad runti. And all the weird pronunciation is because it’s a mixture of languages.

Try learning mandarin and you'll learn that english is a walk in the park.
Vowels have nothing on the four tones in chinese that rises and falls...oops..gone slightly off topic there.
my bad sheikh.

How do you explain that for a Chinese who knows Mandarin, it's easy for him/her to learn similar languages than English? It's difficult for you to learn Mandarin, because you first started learning French, a Latin language with Latin script (same with English).Kukri wrote:Try learning mandarin and you'll learn that english is a walk in the park.

You actually thought a dog raised in China would understand English commands like sit, run, fetch, etc?Kukri wrote:If thats the case then why is it easy for a dog in china to understand chinese?
Re: English is a very difficult Language
Actualy i believe that it depends on people and not the language.
just like some people are good at maths or science, languages are not for everyone.
i know of people whos writing is amazing yet as soon as they open their mouth they sound they just landed.
So when you say english is difficult, it cannot apply to both, the writen english as well as spoken english.

Re: English is a very difficult Language
The length of the vowels depends on the combination it has with the consonants, atleast in the dutch language. If a vowel is followed by two consonants than it will be short, if it´s followed by a consonants and and a vowel, then the vowel will be long
According to that rule the following should have a short/long vowel
Micheal-ich>> vowel 2 consonants>>short
Daniel>ani> vowel, consonant, vowel >>long
Arab>>ara>vowel, consonan, vowel>> long
According to that rule the following should have a short/long vowel
Micheal-ich>> vowel 2 consonants>>short
Daniel>ani> vowel, consonant, vowel >>long
Arab>>ara>vowel, consonan, vowel>> long

Not really. If you put an a in the place of the o it would be "hat"- as in kofiyad.Arabischer wrote:And how about the o in hot? Is sounds a.
If you put I, it would be hit (it)...
Long vowels are often(not all the time) used when there is an e at the end. ie cOne, cAne, line, Use,etc...

Basra, I forgot to mention Shakespearian language is entirely different one that's super difficult. Let's take a look at a sample of his:Basra- wrote:arab oh come on---change your attitude. change your persepective or views, and you will learn English. "When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings"
It baffles me how some manage to understand what this supposedly great English used to babble about.
kitteneey, the a in hat is pronounced with long vowel, while the one I was talking about is pronounced normal. And how about hut? Do you pronounce it like the first u in Hutu? Do you see the folly in the English language? There are close to 1 million English words; are we supposed to memorise how to uniquely read/pronounce each one?sexy-kitten wrote:Not really. I never liked Shakespeare. I suggest to people learning English to stay away from Shakespeare until you are way--ahead in understanding and comprehension of the English language. It is very difficult and very unnecessarily archaic. HOWEVER, THAT example you posted is an amazing sample of the mans genius. I mean, he starts his dialogue, or what i assume is a sonnet --with hopeless desperate plea of destituteness and jealousy of the rich, and yet ends with a heart warming hopefulness with the remembrance of a love ones smile. Bravo! You gotta love that strange bi sexual man we call Shakespeare!
