southern riverine areas still have plenty hippos and crocodiles

leopards are abundant in the shabelle region, causing troubles often with farmers. hence the name shabelle for this region. lions have been reported in the juba region, although they are becoming exceedingly rare. some elephants have been reported in the south, but they consume too much greenery and have been ousted by nomads. some giraffes near the Kenyan border as well.

these are common throughout the country including arid parts: warthogs, ostridge, baboons (there was a baboon plague in gaalkacyo a few years ago), all kinds of small primates, several species of gazelle, wild donkeys, all kinds of lizards, jackals, hyena

I was in Gedo this summer, and I saw wildlife, like zebra, crocodile, hyena, hippo, wild pig, ostrich. Yes it depends where in Somalia you want to know about. In Gedo, many wildlife are seen but dangers too!! I had a horrific accident with a crocodile in Juba river in Baardheere.

^ i was thinking about the southern regions, particularly the areas bordering kenya. it's great to hear that they managed to survive after so many years of war. i figured they were either killed off or sold. somalis sell everything. :|

here's the documentary if anyone's interested:

i fail to see the logic behind why wild animals would disappear due to a civil war. most of the fighting happened within urban areas not in the bush.

the culprit isn't the civil war but unlimited access of grassland that nomads overused, often causing an ecological disequilibrium (leaving too little for wild animals).

actually some fighting did take place outside of the urban centers. anyway, i fail to see why you think the civil war wouldn't cause a decrease in the population of wild animals. a lack of government = a great opportunity for poachers.

We probably have the worlds greatest number of wild animals. From corner to corner they roam and reproduce. Heck, were even exporting wild animals to locations as far and diverse as Minnesota and Australia.

only grazers and large predators who depend on them suffered heavily in recent years. mostly due to nomads depleting land by letting their livestock overgraze the place almost till theirs nothing left for wild grazers. most other animals, especially the riverine ones (hippos, crocodiles) and the arid adapted animals (baboons, ostriches, oryx, lizards, worthhogs) have been completely unaffected by the civil war.

there are also some NGOs working in Somali combating poachers, maybe even better than the previous government. so you guys overestimate the impact of poachers.

Poachers.

while Somali is at war and isn't paying attention to its wildlife, poachers are illegally killing animals. same can be said about Toxic waste in our waters of the coastline. people will take advantage of this, who's there to fight them?
