Why is the eastside of downtown Vancouver so messed up? You can't walk through that area without police escort and for Vancouver that's says a lot.

Bro I heard from relatives that Seattle is littered with the homeless & that they're visible everywhere unlike most major cities where they're contained downtown :!:

I'VE BEEN TO VANCOUVER AND EAST HASTINGS HAS THE LARGEST NUMBERS OF HOMELESS PEOPLE AND DRUG ADDICTS. PROBABLY THE WORST IN NORTH AMERICA. FOR IT'S SUCH A SHAME BECAUSE THE CITY ITSELF IS VERY BEAUTIFUL. IT PISSES ME OFF THAT THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT PUTTING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS INTO THE OLYMPICS INSTEAD OF EAST HASTINGS.

Yeah, technically they say it is the worst place of urban pitfall in all of North America. That place gives me the creeps which is unfortunate since Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Poor East Hastings, it's better now than a few years ago.

Basically about 20 years ago, every province in Canada reformed their welfare programs except for BC, so provinces like Alberta actually loaded up busloads of homeless people and shipped them off to BC. At the same time they closed down the big infamous mental hospital in Vancouver and those people were put out on the street. It's really sad, man :(

Our new mayor has vowed to help those poor people and he has made a difference, but there's a lot more to do.

There isn't really one area where eastern Europeans are, most live downtown but there aren't enough of them there to really influence the demographics.

Richmond on the other hand is 45% Chinese, 35% "White" (English, Scottish, Irish, French, Ukranian etc) 10% "East Asian" (Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese etc) 8% "South Asian" (Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Punjabi etc).

The Chinese folks totally dominate Richmond and it's majority Asian by a somewhat overwhelming degree (65%) and East Asian (55%).

And that was based on the 2006 census, it's probably even more lopsided now.

Delta is a huge Indian stronghold too, though South Vancouver has a huge community too.

My friend is visiting us right now from Vancouver. He is the nephew of Gen Cali Mataan Xaashi, Somalia's first pilot. He is a student at University of British Columbia. I recommend you to him so you guys can chat about Somalia and Somali culture  sometimes.
