UN Envoy for Somali lands Mogadishu in a short trip

Post by ahmad guray »

The United Nations’ Special Envoy for Somalia, Augustine Mahiga, on Tuesday reached at Mogadishu International Airport, where he met top leaders of Somalia's transitional federal government (TFG) in a second trip in less than five months.

Mahiga met with Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the embatteled president of Somalia and his prime minister, Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed at Mogadishu airport.

Security was tightened as the streets in the capital city could be seen a lot of government forces against a back drop of new accounts that suicide attacks could take place.

After the meeting, Somalia’s Prime Minister Mohammed spoke to the media, and said that Mahiga, UN special envoy held a closed door meeting with the country’s leader Ahmed.

“Somali president and Augustine Mahiga discussed a number of issues, including beefing up the security condition in Somalia, the reconciliation, good governance, preparation trusteeship (the incoming government that will replace the current government)” Mohammed told reporters in Mogadishu airport.

He also indicated the government will focus on making national constitution as soon as possible.

“Our government is committed to uproot Al shabaab terrorists from Somalia completely.”

For his part, Mahiga gave a brief statement to the media and said: “I am very delighted to come to Mogadishu, Somalia to meet with the prime minister since the formation of the transitional government and I met with the president of course”.
