In a press conference held in Mogadishu, the minister of finance of Somalia’s transitional federal government on Wednesday said here is no corruption in all new governmental institutions.
Hussein Abdi Halane said he always hears reports from local media suggesting some Somali officials use the national assets in a corrupt manner, spelling out that all media charges are baseless and false.
He said the government has a general treasurer who has the responsibility of keeping national properties, noting that government has not been received any complaints of impropriety.
“All new governmental institutions are free from corruption and money laundering,” the minister said.
Halane also said it was necessary for the Somali government to take into consideration the 2011 budget overwhelmingly passed by the transitional federal parliament last week.
“The budget is little. Only $1 million per a month falls in our hands, so that Somali government is meeting with all big businessmen to increase government income from tax,” said Halane.
The statement of the minister comes less 24 hours after Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed, the prime minister of Somalia's transitional federal government, warned the newly designated small cabinet against using the country's assets in a corrupt manner.
Mohammed also said that no minister will travel abroad until he makes clear the aim of the trip and the length of time he will be out of the country, adding that anyone in the Somali government suspected of corruption would be brought to justice.
