Situation in Somalia in 2011

Post by James Dahl »

Now with flags!
Image

Al-Shabaab controls virtually all of the south save for Dolow town run by Barre Hiraale's ASWJ group. Central Somalia's cluster of quasi-independent states of Central Somali State, Ximan and Xeeb and Galmudug (all of whom are now largely under the ASWJ umbrella of military cooperation) as well as ASWJ's own administration of the highway towns into Hiiraan stand as a precarious obstacle between Puntland and Al-Shabaab.

AMISOM and TFG forces have managed to retain control of the airport, seaport and Villa Somalia, but little else.

Somaliland continues their steady advance across the disputed territories, though Buuhoodle has retained their independence thus far.

Somalia has been reduced down from dozens of different factions to basically 4 factions, one of which doesn't consider itself part of Somalia: Somaliland, Puntland, ASWJ and Al-Shabaab.

One thing that's either amusing or tragic, fully two states that have been declared recently are entirely or virtually entirely under the control of al-Shabaab. Both Hiiraan State and Waax iyo Waadi have flags, presidents etc but no territory.

They've been attacked a few times now, but they've managed to retain their independence so far.
The last attack was a joint Somaliland-Ethiopia attack, where they lost Widh-Widh to Somaliland.

The last I heard, the Marehan wing of the central ASWJ had fallen out with the Hawiye wing over their joining the TFG, and had split off to form their own administration. Is this incorrect?

Pictures speak volumes.

In essence Somalia's solution lies with Puntland, ASWJ and Al-Shabaab. TFG is irrelavent and since they have failed to engage with any of the influential main 3 groups in Somalia they should pack their bags and leave negotiations to the real players in Somalia politics.

2011 is the year that TFG should be absorbed by another group.

U need to re-check your sources. Last time i read the suufi news, it says that they are still united.
