The Transitional Federal government said it has returned to the United Nations Children’s Fund one if its bullet proof vehicles that were hijacked by Al-shabab militias in Jowhar.

Shabab militias went away with the two vehicles from UNICEF’s office in Jowhar when they took control of the town in 2009.

TFG officials who were recently appointed to be part of Jowhar’s administration said they were able to take away one of the vehicles and handed over to their colleagues in Mogadishu. Ali Jowhar who is the officer appointed by the TFG to be the commissioner of f the Middle Shabele region confirmed that the vehicle was handed over to UNICEF.

Jowhar district, which is the capital of the Middle Shabele region, is mainly controlled by armed opposition insurgents. Al-shabab has suspended the operation of several humanitarian organizations operating in Southern Somalia.

The vehicle was handed over by the assistant minister for internal affairs on behalf of the TFG and received by one of UNICEF’s officials in Mogadishu.
