The "shifta" war between Kenya and Somalia, and NFD today
Background:
The Shifta War (1963–1967) was a secessionist conflict in which ethnic Somalis in the Northern Frontier District (NFD) of Kenya (a region that is and has historically been almost exclusively inhabited by ethnic Somalis[1][2][3]) attempted to join with their fellow Somalis in a Greater Somalia. The Kenyan government named the conflict "shifta", after the Somali word for "bandit", as part of a propaganda effort. The Kenyan counter-insurgency General Service Units forced civilians into "protected villages" (essentially concentration camps)[4] as well as killing a large number of livestock kept by the pastoralist Somalis. The war ended in the late summer of 1967 when Muhammad Haji Ibrahim Egal, Prime Minister of the Somali Republic, signed a ceasefire with Kenya. However, the violence in Kenya deteriorated into disorganized banditry, with occasional episodes of secessionist agitation, for the next several decades. The war and violent clampdowns by the Kenyan government caused large-scale disruption to the way of life in the district, resulting in a slight shift from pastoralist and transhumant lifestyles to sedentary, urban lifestyles.
Now according to the IMF, NFD and much of Northern Kenya is heavily underdeveloped. Even though Kenya had the capacity to develop these region in the north, they dont. They collect taxes from the Somalis living there and they take a bit of their earnings. But they never return that earning as a bit of infrastructure to their area.
My question to all Snetters (particulary those that have been in Kenya) here are, is there any strong relation between Somalis in NFD and Kenya´s goverment?
Would Somalis living in NFD ever object to reunite with their fellow Somalis in Somalia if Somalia got its act together?
And last but not least , i believe that if Somalia in the future is going to claim Ogaden and the self determination of Somalis, then NFD ought to be also mentioned in the same sentence if the people there are receptive to Somali rule.
Kenya according to world organisation performed worse 6 straight years in a row on human rights and majority is the goverment and Somalis.
