How does a membership in the Arab league benefit Somalia?

Post by Coeus »

Somalia has been a member of Arab League in over 37 years now. I want us Somalis to discuss how beneficiary this membership has been for us. This is vital, because if we truly are thinking about the future of the Nation Somalia, we need to know what elements are beneficial and those that are not.

I also want to add another question. Do you see Somalia being dependent on Arab League politically or economically when we today are witnessing the early stages of the destruction coming to the middle east and Arab world in particular.

Arab leugue members dont care for Somalia , all they do is sometimes fund the TFG and give them aid here and there thats what Somalia has benefited from the Arab league so far Umar Musa and his arab leugue are facing an arab intifada in the arab world right now thats their biggest Topic at the moment and ofcourse the Palestinian cause

I see. Lets incoroporate facts in this discussion.

Since the collapse of the Somali state 1991. The Arab League has donated 1 million dollars to the African union mission (Amisom) and has donated 0 $ to the Somali goverment otherwise known as TFG.

So it is evident here that the Arab league in 20 years has offered minimal assistance to Somalia and its People.

Infact the have done the opposite according to a relaible source.
Compare this disparity with the money provided by Arab League to rebuilding Gaza in Palestine for the recent Israeli devastation. Saudi Arabia provided one (1) Billion US dollars, Qatar $250 million and Algeria $100 million in addition to more than 7.5 Billion Euros pledged for Palestine by the members of the Arab League and European Union countries. The Arab League provided ten times more relief and donation to Sri Lankan Tamil a Buddhist nation with no connections to the Arab League than Somalia. In fact some Arab League members are being recently discovered to have indirectly funneling money to the Somali Al-Shabab and Hisbul Islam through Eritrea, a terrorist organization toppling the Somali transitional government who carried out the recent suicide bombing that four government ministers and students were killed.
So clearly they are financially not backing Somalia´s goverment.

Now then politically? Do we see any benefits politically from the Arab League from past or future Somalia foreign policy?

The Arab League is useless to all of its member states, not only Somalia.

As far as Arabs, the TFG has gotten aid from the Khaleej plenty of times... But Somali politicians use that money for themselves and buy lavish villas in Kenya, for example.

Ask any Arab from Morocco to Iraq and you have your answer.

Why do you think the Arab world is such a joke?

Even before Somalia's state collapse.
Throughout the 1980s, Somalia became increasingly dependent upon economic aid from the conservative, wealthy oil-exporting states of Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. This dependence was a crucial factor in the Siad Barre regime's decision to side with the United States-led coalition of Arab states that opposed Iraq following that country's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Support for the coalition brought economic dividends: Qatar canceled further repayment of all principal and interest on outstanding loans, and Saudi Arabia offered Somalia a US$70 million grant and promised to sell it oil at below prevailing international market prices.

Saaxib nobody denied that, but the discussion is clearly about the last 20 years

The TFG has gotten millions from the khaleej, not the Arab league as a whole (Amr Musa and the Sham region or North Africa)

Most North african nations are poor, unless you are talking about Egypt & Libya. If so, then a source supporting your statement must be provided.
