Somali president dissolves parliament, power struggle next

Post by Coeus »

Before jetting for the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Somalia’s embattled president has issued a firm decree, ordering dissolving the parliament, fuelling the dispute between the much-disputed parliament speaker and the president.

In the decree which was not yet officially announced, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed accuses the parliament of being sedentary and corrupt as he similarly charged the speaker of meaningless abroad travels.

Ahmed, who was elected as the president of Somalia on 2009 was seen by many of being reluctant to help the war-weary nation and pacify the country, except words with no action.

The president said in his version decree, “the parliamentarians were dissolved“.

No comments could be reached from the Somali pariament heads on the matter which analysts describe as new power struggle between the two unpopular president and the speaker.

If the presidential decree comes into effect, the contest will be another bitter race between the two men. Sources in the government say the speaker is hoping to secure the presidential seat when the government’s term expires on August this year, giving them entrenching grip on power.

The horn of Africa nation has been without central government since1991 after clan militias and warlords overthrown the dictator regime of Siad Barre that lastly leashed out to constant violence for more than 20 years.
