The SSC militia backed by elements from Ethiopia’s rebel group — the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and members of Puntland’s security forces on Monday attacked the Somaliland army positions and claimed the lives of four soldiers, twelve were wounded and two were reported missing.
The army killed 16, injured 24 and captured another 16 militants which included a number of ONLF rebels. The injured ONLF, SSC and Puntland militia were taken to the Somali central town of Galkayo by Puntland authority to receive medical care. Two were reported to have died along the way.
According to Somaliland’s intelligence services, the SSC and ONLF are both receiving arms from Eritrea through Puntland’s port-town of Bosasso.
The SSC agreed to provide a safe-heaven for Ethiopia’s ONLF while Puntland agreed to provide it’s port for both groups to import weaponry. All three groups hail from Somalia’s Darod clan and have decided to collaborate under such umbrella. On the other hand, Eritrea has been training and funding armed groups in the Horn of African region for the last two decades to destabilize Ethiopia and its allies.
