APPLE VALLEY, Minn. -- The Atlantic bottlenose dolphin known as April passed away Tuesday at the Minnesota Zoo.
April, 44, was mom to Allie and grandma to the newest dolphin at the zoo, Taijah.
Officials at the zoo say April had been suffering from some physical ailments and was undergoing treatment at the time of her death.
April had been a resident of the Minnesota Zoo since January of 2008. She and Allie were on loan from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.
"April was one of our most beloved animals," Director of Biological Programs Kevin Willis said in a statement. "Since she arrived here a few years ago, she quickly became a guest favorite. She enjoyed interacting with her trainers during enrichment sessions, and was often heard vocalizing during these interactions. She will be terribly missed by staff, volunteers, and all the zoo guests who met her."
A necropsy (animal autopsy) will be performed to determine the cause of death.
