Muslim is what we should all be identified by, the other names are made by those who came after sayidna Mohamed's death to differentiate among themselves. I've read somewhere the term "ahl al Sunna waa al Jama" was coined by Mu'awiya ibn Sufyan.

Linguistically, shia means "group of" but unfortunately it got tainted with political division at first and got narrowed down to religious division among muslims.
