Hijacked Americans 'killed by captors' off Somalia

Four Americans hijacked by Somali pirates off the coast of Oman have been killed by their captors, US defence officials say.

The US military said its forces trailing the vessel had responded to gunfire heard aboard but found all the captives shot when they arrived.

The yacht S/V Quest, hijacked on Friday, was owned and sailed by Scott and Jean Adam of California.

Also killed were two US passengers, Phyllis Mackay and Bob Riggle.
'Shot by captors'

In a statement, US Central Command said that negotiations were under way between the US Navy and the pirates, when the US forces heard gunfire coming from the Quest about 0600GMT.

They boarded the ship, killing two pirates in the process, and discovered the four Americans shot. The US Navy sailors attempted to provide first aid but the hostages died, the military said.

"As they responded to the gunfire, reaching and boarding the Quest, the forces discovered all four hostages had been shot by their captors," Gen James Mattis of US Central Command Commander said in a statement.

"We express our deepest condolences for the innocent lives callously lost aboard the Quest," the statement added.

The US Navy captured 13 pirates, and found the remains of two other pirates already dead about the vessel, the US military said.

The US Navy said it had been closely monitoring the vessel once it learned it had been hijacked, sending four warships to the area.


Remember when they killed those 4 pirates when saving that American captain. Now this time, Pirates were not stupid and acted swiftly. Now the South Koreans are next hopefully

These people were warned NOT to travel in the Indian Ocean near Somalia, Yet they didn't listen, sometimes people pride and arrogance is usually causes their untimely fall.

The Indian Ocean is very big, you can't forbid travel on it. These people were near Oman, their killing is not justified. Especially since they did the pirates no harm. The pirates have lost their moral backing and are now killers and plunderers instead of protectors of Somali waters.

The Indian Ocean is very big, you can't forbid travel on it. These people were near Oman, their killing is not justified. Especially since they did the pirates no harm. The pirates have lost their moral backing and are now killers and plunderers instead of protectors of Somali waters.

The pirates usually don't killed their hostages, since it would be stupid and it doesn't make any economic sense. Most likely it was a failed rescue attempt by the Americans hence why all 4 are dead.

Of course they are going to try and rescue American citizens, that's their job. Paying ransom to the hostage takers will not only undermine the government, but will also encourage the trade. These killings will not only lead to an immediate and bloody retribution, but will negatively affect Somalis worldwide when headlines like "Somali pirates slaughter innocent tourists" are plastered on every news channel.

I am disgusted that some of us are cheering for the killing of innocent people I understand if the so called pirates capture those ships that are dumping toxic waste on our shore or those that are crossing the lines of legality when it comes to fishing and international waters etc..but come on..four people on vacation??? What did they gain? 3 killed and 16 will be killed too...19 Somali lives and 4 American lives..What is there to cheer
