Educated Somali Youth?

Post by juzme123 »

This is a spin-off thread from the U.K v.s. U.S Somalis but this time we're not talking about any particular country of groups of people.

I don't know about cities with larger Somali populations but where I live there are about 20 Somali students at my university. That is in a city where roughly only 500 Somalis live :D

I have noticed though that generally, a big proportion of Somalis do not get a university education and that is particularly so for males :|

Education is important because knowledge is power.

So the question is how educated is the Somali youth in the diaspora? In terms of higher education, how many people do you know who have at least a degree, are studying towards one or will undertake undergraduate study in the future?

Ive finished University already, I majored in Psychology.

Im in the U.K but came here from the U.S.

The reality is there are much more educated Somalis in the U.K rather than the U.S. Because in the States you have to pay from your own pocket to get into friggin college wax kale iska ilow. Reer UK get shown much love from the government and their still lazy ass bums, when they get their Uni degree they chill out and do nothing. In America whether or not you have a high school or college diploma you gotta work yo ass off

Every young Somali person in my area is either at uni, finished uni or going to uni. Unless there is some random person who is being hidden in their house I can confidently say 100% of the population where I'm at. That might change in the UK after the tuition prices go up.

Manshallah  :D That sounds very good. I'm surprised cuz it seems a lot of people in the U.K got to uni then.

---

Ruralman,

Yeah its true that it is easier in the U.K because of the system. Interest free loans are radily available which makes it a lot more affordable.

In somewhere like The Netherlands where they have a system comparable to the former 11+ entrance system of the U.K it is definately a lot harder for people to get into university. Children take a test in year 8 (aged 12) that determines their entire future and the choices open to them. They call it the Cito toets and if you get below a HAVO your basically fucked and you'll end up in a shit high-school that will lead you to either prison or being a cleaner (or other such jobs) (IMO). They limit the ambitions and oppertunites of people from young on and this sysem serves for 'allocation of future roles within society' so you basically get the poor, immigrants and ethnic minorities in crappy jobs whilst the white & affluent in professional jobs.

In the U.K the 11+ exam was ablolished which makes it far easier to get into university as everyone has a fair chance to take their GCSE's> A-Levels ---> entrance into uni = more likely to get a degree.

---

Hyper,

Yeah a lot of people do drop out cuz they find it too difficult. I'm in my second year too

---

BV,

Yeah it might change when univeristy tuition goes up but it should't really cuz they still get the loans, although they'll pay it back.

my opinion, university studies much easier than high school here. you dont have to take 10 subjects every year and memorizing etc.
at uni you just take what you like to study. you choose. but i guess they just get bored .

I dont live in a Somali populated area.. But within my own family, all my older siblings have at least a Masters except my sister who has a standard degree.

From what I've seen more and more Somalis are in Uni than ever before.. Will this contiune? I dont know, time will tell.

I remember watching Somali Channel a few months back and they were interviewing a Somali lecturer in Sheffield and he was saying how there is over 500 local Somalis in the two Universitys of Sheffield.. And I wasn't even surprised.. :|

Ive noticed that there is trend of many young Somalis graduating from UK universities. I recently visited SOAS in London and was pleased to see Somali students esp the girls are step ahead of the boys in terms of education.

Majority of Somali youths in the UK do go to uni but it seems that the somali community like to foucus on the bad allaxamduallah ive finished uni and got my Msc but its hard for us some of our somali youths to continue on in thier studies i hve seen a lot of dropout who couldnt continue..

With the tution fees going up its going to be harder for somali youths to hve that opportunity
