Reality hits home for Puntland and Saado's forces

LAS ANOD — At least 25 militants from Somalia’s Puntland region were killed and 30 others wounded during a clash between Puntland forces and the Somaliland military in Sool on Monday afternoon.

According to medical personnel in Garowe, the bodies of 25 dead combatants and further 30 others with injuries were brought to Garowe hospital on Monday evening.

The fighting erupted around 1pm near the Ganbara village in the disputed Sool region when fighters loyal to Puntland attacked Somaliland army barracks from two directions. The fighting lasted several hours and heavy machine gun and anti-aircraft firepower were used.

According to Keyse Ahmed, Somaliland military commander, the army chased the Puntland fighters to the village of Buuro Wadal, about 30 km north of Garowe, the administration capital of Puntland.

He said the Puntland forces had 23 technicals – pick up trucks mounted with machine guns and 7 commercial trucks carrying fighters. He said their plan was to go through the Somaliland defence with speed and attack Las Anod, the provincial capital of Sool. He added they captured 7 prisoners including wounded fighters and three technicals with mounted anti-craft guns.

He said if the militants regroup and attack the army again, they will enter Garowe this time. When asked if his men lost any lives he said two sustained injuries and were taken to Burao for treatment.

Eye witnesses said Puntland fighters fled from their dead bodies only to return in the evening to pick them up once the army returned back in its barracks.

This is the deadliest clash between Somalia’s Puntland region and Somaliland in recent years. However, Puntland uses an armed tribal militant operating in the Buhodle district to fight a proxy war against Somaliland. Somaliland said its patience with Puntland region was running out.

Puntland claims the region of Sool on the bases of clan affiliation, while Somaliland maintains its part of its colonial border.

1991, Somaliland declared it has restored its inpendence from Mogadishu after Somalia descended into a chaos. Somaliland is seeking international recognition.
