Re: gabdho suaal
Each society has good and bad.
I've thought about it, and you can't really fairly compare the two. The West is more advanced economically and so there are more opportunities and Somalis are Muslim therefore we don't behave the same as a typical Western society would.
That aside, where the West now see their women as pieces of meat Somalis have generally always seen their women as pieces of furniture because the women always carried the bulk of responsibilities without the corresponding share of benefits. Nevertheless, other than FGM, Somali women have never, to my knowledge, suffered a noticeable trend of mistreatment or discrimination. There is the idea of fathers "giving away" their daughters but I don't think girls were married off against their consent. There are many educated Somali women and Somali business women, so there is no discrimination there.
The only hold back is perhaps the fact that the Somali society does not appreciate fully what Somali women are capable of in terms of leadership in general and political leadership in particular, but that might be the influence of that 1 haddith. Also there is the very strong qabyaalad and patriarchal nature of our people so women are somewhat naturally forced into the background in matters of "the tol". But Somali women are too strong minded to be forcefully held there. Come to think of it, I can't think of 1 thing that Somali women have been forced to endure against their will. They are very accepting of the flaws of Somali men and act very strongly to compliment their nature. Even in leadership, I would wager that most Somali women would say that that is the role of men and taking that away would emasculate their men so they would willingly step aside.
The West is you get what you give. Act like a piece of meat and you will get treated like a piece of meat. They prefer their women next to naked but no one will force you to take off your clothes. Live and let live is the theory of their existence.

Re: gabdho suaal
let me put it this way, are women in the west or somalia more free than the other ? freedom is a powerful word but it can be very empty if the meaning is not fully understood, so to avoid that answer the question in terms of economics, education, family & social etc which society gives women more freedom in these fields
