Postgrad engineering student's research recognised with a prestigious award

Blast-resistant tall buildings, sports stadia, oil platforms and train stations are closer to reality thanks to the work of engineer Hussein Jama.

Mr Jama is investigating how to build more resilient structures made from tubular steel that can withstand accidental explosions caused by gas leaks or dust explosions as well as from terrorist attacks.

His work will also assist in the protection of large oil rigs in remote areas of the ocean that are vulnerable to accidental explosions, which can result in loss of life, reduced oil supplies and massive pollution.

The 35-year-old Somalian-born postgraduate student is one of six people to win a prestigious 2007 Victoria Fellowship. He received the Fellowship on Wednesday 15 August at a gala function at Government House from the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser, AC.

The Victoria Fellowships, worth $18,000 each, were established 10 years ago by the Victorian Government to recognise young researchers with leadership potential and to enhance their future careers, while developing new ideas which could offer commercial benefit to Victoria.

He will use the Victoria Fellowship to further his research into the behaviour of tubular beams and columns under blast load conditions. Tubular structures are increasingly used in structural applications including oil platforms in Victoria.

Mr Jama's research is twofold: firstly to understand better how tubular beams and columns respond under blast conditions and secondly, to determine how safe tubular steel structures are after a blast.

He will travel to South Africa to carry out blast experiments at the Blast Impact and Survivability Research Unit at the University of Cape Town, the only facility in the world where explosives can be used in a University setting.

He will also travel to Norway to carry out tests on the steel specimens using specialised facilities.

Mr Jama is undertaking a doctorate in engineering at Monash University

As a kid, Josean Perez's eyesight was fine. But after a year in a computer science class at Beaverton's Westview High School, the 17-year-old needed glasses.

Was the computer to blame?

This year, Perez decided to answer that question. After months of research, he and two other Westview students will compete today at the Intel Northwest Science Expo at Portland State University where they'll prove that extended time on a computer can hurt teens' eyesight.

What makes their team different? None of the students is in a science class. And a few years ago, none spoke English.

Perez is from Puerto Rico. His partners, Faduma Ahmed-Ali, 18, and Yevgeniy Kostenko, 17, hail from Somalia and Ukraine, respectively.

After meeting in English as a Second Language classes, the trio joined the after-school science research club. The program supports people underrepresented in science research --women and students from other countries --by providing them with resources they might not have had access to on their own.

To test their theory, the students turned groups of teenagers into guinea pigs. After a round of vision tests, they had the test subjects work on computers for 45 minutes. Then they tested their subjects' vision again. A week later, they brought the same test subjects into work on computers for two hours, testing their vision again before and after.

Everyone's vision was slightly worse after using the computer, but after the two-hour period, some boys actually complained that their eyes hurt. Boys also were more likely to hunch toward the computer, craning their necks to better read the screens. After poring over graphs, numbers and responses, they concluded that being too close to a computer can strain your eyes.

The project was good enough to secure a first-place win at the regional Beaverton-Hillsboro fair and guarantee them a spot at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta in May.

Having three very different students on the team made the project better, they say. Perez is the natural team leader, a confident planner who sees the big picture. Kostenko homes in on the details and translates data into understandable visuals. Ahmed-Ali is energetic, the voice of the group. After participating on the speech and debate team, she knows the most about public speaking and coaches her partners.

"Sometimes you're trying to get your point across, but you don't have the vocabulary for that word," Ahmed-Ali says. "But we back each other up."

Their strengths and the languages running through their brains may be different, but one thing connects them: their eyesight.

"The topic was relevant and of high interest to all of them because they do all wear glasses now," says their adviser, Debbie Cooper.

The students want one of the many scholarships given to state winners so badly that they were willing to stay after school long after other students went home. But win or lose, the students are happy just proving they could do it.

"And it gave me an extra boost at school," Kostenko says. "I didn't think teachers would actually ever know me, but now they're all impressed."

During the public viewing before the regional fair, a parent stopped them. "I thought it was a myth," the students remember him saying. "I let my son play video games all night long."

"I wanted to raise awareness," Ahmed-Ali says. "A lot of people don't know the effects, but now less parents will let kids stay on the computer so long."
