SOMALIA: State of the Nation, March

Post by James Dahl »

For the first time in a long time, a major territorial shift as the Dolow group (now Jubaland State of Somalia) captures at least half of Gedo, while al-Shabaab drives ASWJ/Ethiopian forces out of Hiiraan entirely, re-establishing the status quo of 2009 with the ASWJ/Shabaab front line at the frontier of Mataban. Small gains in Mogadishu has made the TFG position more secure, especially in South Mogadishu.

The question is, can Jubaland expand south of the core Marehan area of Gedo into the more diverse southern Gedo? Looks as though the answer is no, though it also looks as though Jubaland isn't going anywhere either.

In the north SSC has pushed Somaliland forces back to Laascaanood, but the city itself remains in Somaliland's hands.

Firstly, like I mentioned to you before, Barre Hiiraale's army in Ceelwaaq has captured all of Ceelwaaq district such as Busaar, Ceel Gaduud, Godob and has also captured some parts of Baardheere district such as Faxfaxdhuun, Buulo Amiin etc. By way what do you mean by South Gedo is diverse? Gedo as a whole is a Marehan region, lol this aint Lower and Middle Juba you know!

Southern Gedo has a lot of Bartire and Absame, Marehan are traditionally the minority there though it's hard to say the % of Marehan today.

James, how do you determine which area is controlled by who? Sources on the ground, news reports etc?

I'm not doing any such thing, stating facts isn't the same as having a bias. Ask anyone from Baardheere, don't take my word for it.

I know people in Somalia that I trust to tell me about the situation. I also follow the news, but asking people who have relatives or friends nearby is the only reliable way to get information about what's actually going on.

I myself is from Baardheere and visted my region last summer, I was there in 04 aswell. Baardheere is part of Gedo and is owned by Sade Darood just like all other districts in Gedo. If displaced people come to my region doesn't mean they own it or their tribe live there!

Then you should know that the city of Baardheere is represented by a Marehan, an Absame and a Mirifle representative, and that doesn't show how diverse the city actually is.

Who "owns" the city is a more nebulous issue, but I'm talking about demographics.

Where did u get that bullshit from, there is no such thing as absame and murufle representative, are u talking about Al Shabab? Cause there was never ever no other tribe that had any authority in Baardheere or any other districts in Gedo. Regarding demography all of Gedo is Marehan population including Baardheere. I can't believe i'm arguing to a white guy about my region  I must be a fool to argue with u about my tribe and my land.

Cirwaaq, any1 is welcome in my region, i'm the one that welcomed the displaced people, gave them food. But i was just clarifying to James about my region, that doesn't mean i'm against unity.
