Ethiopian music is better than Somali music
and Amharic music is the best in the Horn beating Somali, Oromo, and Tigrinya. Agree?

Re: Ethiopian music is better than Somali music
Nationalism has nothing to do with this. My ears are the judge and they are not even close, maybe old Somali music (before 90's) beat Amharic music then but today's Amharic music is superior to ridiculous keyboard stuff we call "Somali music". You would think the younger group being in countries around the world could progress but they are biting off of old lyrics and electric keyboard material.

Re: Ethiopian music is better than Somali music
Somali music of today is so disconnected from the somali culture, its no longer nurtured by somali tradition!
There r still some stars!
Oromo music of today, except for few is more tradition oriented, some are master pieces!
Old school amharic music used to be and is still terrific, the young generation is rubbish! its second hand reggae or rap!
Tigray is mono rythmic,
Eretrea tigrinya are probably the ones who found the way between modernism and tradition!
Anyway enjoy this traditionnal Afran Qallo shagoyyee :

Todays Somali music is in a dire situation, its too loud, generic, cheesy and repetitive. I think that there should be a Somali talent show and a musical retro revolution where artists use more traditional instruments like kaban, shareero and drums with a modern twist.

They copy Somali and Sudanese music a lot. Nothing about their music is original. In Ethiopia, the Oromo and Uraaga have good music. You are probably confusing the music of these two ethnic groups with that of the Amhara.

Re: Ethiopian music is better than Somali music
Bareento, I agree with you 100%. It seems when the Somali government died in '91, everything that made Somali died including creativity. What is going on today is not representative of Somali culture or people. It is like they are confused without anything to hold on to. There are many that have voices, but the reality is their music sucks.
However, I disagree with old Amharic music. I think the past, Somali music in the '70's and '80's was the most superior and I have been told this by both Somalis as well as Ethiopians who said Somali music was the most played in Ethiopian clubs during that time. However, the modern Amharic music that has evolved to modernity while still being distinctly Ethiopian is far and beyond the rest of Horn of Africa. To be honest, it is one of my favorite genres of music even though I don't speak Amharic.
Tigrinya to me is mono rythmic like you said and whether the kind of the Agame in Ethiopia (lol I know it is not nice) or the Eritrean tigrinya, it seems out of all the Horn musics Tigrinya is the least flexible and in my opinion will remain the least interesting. All of the music in the Tigrinya language revolves around that circle dance.
As for Oromo, some remind me of Somali, some of Amharic, some others, and then there are distinctly Oromo brands like this which I enjoy very much

Not. The Oromo and Gurage both have specific sounds and some good music, but Amharic music trumps all.Archerr wrote:They copy Somali and Sudanese music a lot. Nothing about their music is original. Ethiopian music is nice, they are more afrocentric with drums instead of load electric key board. overal i go with Somali music purely because of the lyric, i prefer listening to something i actually understand and it does help my somali, so i go for Somali music, definitely Kacaan tunes and old folk songs.

Re: Ethiopian music is better than Somali music
Voltage, I said old school Amharic music, not necessarly old music....hinestly "modern" amharic music if not for few sucks.
Its hyped up reggae in Merkato sausage.
I do agree old somali music along the sudanese were far more developped among all HOA.
In the 60s and 70s amhara /oromo singers were copying sudanese and somalis.
Oromo is diverse and do not necessarly sound the same foreigners.
I myself am mostly attracted to Harerge and Wallo music.
One thing that is striking in somali music is, whether it be old or modern, they completely overlook the traditional dance.
Its rare to see somli clip with traditionl danse
Traditional Wallo oromo (warra baabboo area)

you all talk like experts. you guys don't know nothing about music.
if you want to know which one is better, ask the experts, like randy Jackson.

Re: Ethiopian music is better than Somali music
Somali music is somewhat westernized. because we have the beat, paino and the guitar, whereas most Horn Africans don't have the beat and may use local or native music instruments.
also Ethiopians dance is so native and traditional. they dance shaking their shoulders and head and wear white cloth. Somali artists wear suits or pants, and don't dance traditionally, so they have more global influence.
Only Somali music have beat in East Africa.
You think Ethiopians get anything on these Romantic Songs, they may think traditional and rock their heads and shoulder, but nobody plays a slow jam romantic songs like Somalis.
