Ethiopia 'ready to help Eritreans topple regime'

AFP

ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia is ready to help the people of Eritrea topple the regime of Issaias Afeworki, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told lawmakers Tuesday, ruling out a military invasion.

Meles accused the Eritrean government of trying to destabilise Ethiopia by backing rebel groups such as the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) as well as the Somali Al Qaeda-affiliated Shebab.

"We have to facilitate ways for Eritrean people to remove their dictatorial regime," he told journalists. "We have no intention to jump into their country but we need to extend our influence there. If the Eritrean government tries to attack us, we will also respond."

The border war that pitted Eritrea against Ethiopia from 1998 to 2000 left some 80,000 dead. Despite a peace agreement signed in 2000 in Algiers, tension continues to run high between the two Horn of Africa neighbours.

Meles also slammed what he said was the influence of the Egyptian government, which he accused of encouraging Eritrea to destabilise Ethiopia, in order to dissuade Ethiopia from developing the Nile.

"Recently, Eritrea has been training and deploying Al Shebab and home-grown destructive forces to terrorize our country. But Egypt is the direct force behind these destructive elements," he told lawmakers.

He called on Egyptians to realize that Ethiopia is not their enemy, saying that Ethiopia's plan to build a major dam on the Nile will also benefit the downstream countries.

"We want the Egyptian people to realise that we do not want to hurt them," he said.

Ethiopia has plans to use Nile waters for agricultural projects. Egypt feels such projects would threaten its water supply.

Ethiopia says Egypt is not an enemy despite Nile Water dispute

By Tesfa-Alem Tekle

April 5, 2011 (ADDIS ABABA) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said on Tuesday that his country has no intention to hurt the peoples of Egypt and instead wants win-win solution over the use of the Nile waters.

Speaking to lawmakers Zenawi called on Egyptians to realize the construction of Dam on the Nile River is not intended to destroy lives of Egyptians instead it is for the advantage of Egyptians as well.

"We want the Egyptian people to know that we are not their enemy” Zenawi said adding “we want joint cooperation based on mutual interest for the better future of the peoples of the two countries”.

Ethiopia last week launched construction of $4.7 billion massive hydropower project in its Nile basin near its border with Sudan.

The Ethiopian premier said he was not concerned by predictions that the two countries could be drawn into conflict over the issue.

“Such a concern is over exaggerated” Zenawi said, adding “it is something we give 5% preparation to”.

He however said the main concern now is what he termed it was “indirect attacks’’ from Egypt accusing the north African country of supporting home-based destructive forces to destabilize Ethiopia and disrupt the dam projects.

The huge investment on Nile dam, funded solely by the government, is the biggest amount of money the Horn Nation has invested on a hydropower dam. Ethiopia accuses Egypt of being engaged in a continuous campaign to convince international donors to refrain financing Ethiopian projects on the River Nile telling them the risk of conflict.

Ethiopia calls for regime change in Eritrea

Ethiopia's Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, on Tuesday call for regime change in Eritrea and accused an opposition party, Medrek, of planning and instigating violence in Ethiopia. Zenawi has also accused Egypt of backing Eritrea's effort to destabilize in that country.

“Ethiopia would not tolerate Eritrean government’s destructive policy anymore and the country is forced to change its policy from “passive defiance” to directly help Eritrean people topple the regime,” Zenawi said while presenting an eight-month government’s performance report to parliament.

According to the prime minister, Eritrean government has continued its attempt to destabilize Ethiopia by deploying terrorists and home grown “destructive forces”, such as the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and Ogden National Liberation Front (ONLF), as well as the Somalia extremists group, Al shabab.

He further stated, “Until now, our strategy has been defending our sovereignty by speeding up our development. Now, we found that we could not go any longer with passive defense. It’s not possible to take passive defense as the only alternative.”

“Therefore, we have to facilitate ways for Eritrean people to remove its dictatorial regime. We have no intention to jump into their country but we need to extend our influence there. If Eritrean government tries to attack us, we will also respond proportionally,” Meles added.

The Ethiopian Prime Minster brought to light how the Egyptians are working with Eritrea to destabilize Ethiopia in order to hinder its decision to construct dam on the Nile.

Meles told Parliament, “Recently, Eritrea is training and deploying, Al shabab and locally grown destructive forces to terrorize our country. But Egypt is the direct force behind these destructive elements that back them.”

“In order to prevent any development on Blue Nile River, Egypt and Eritrea has created their own front,” he added.

He, however, confirmed that that Ethiopia has no intention of invading Eritrea or opening a new war.

Ethiopia Prime Minster told the country’s Parliament that Egypt’s a long time strategy is to destabilize Ethiopia and so that cannot raise a voice about using the Nile.

Meles Further pointed out that the current policy of backing Eritrea and other terrorists group is part of it long time strategy that goes back to over 50 years.
He stressed that the Ethiopian people are not enemies of the Egyptian people and he called on the people of Egypt to realize that the building of the dam is also beneficial to them.

Previously the Prime Minster in his speech at launching of the dam construction he told the audience that Ethiopia would welcome Egypt and Sudan to join in construction at any level if they wish to do so.

Speaking about opposition forces that are legally recognized, “The Ethiopian government is neither blind nor deaf. You don’t have to think as if we did not know anything,” Meles said adding that the government has refrained from releasing the list of detainees and suspected OLF members by police until the opposition parties did it.

“Now that the opposition has made public the list of the detainees, it means that the opposition is testifying that all OLF members who are detained are their members. In other words, they proved by themselves that the opposition is the hiding place for OLF”.

“We even know that OLF members have been here with us for five years at this house (parliament). We knew everything, but we did not take them to court, as we did not have substantial evidence. Now, the opposition parties have proved it those who are in custody are their members,” Meles told parliament.

The opposition’s party “Medrek, particularly Unity for Democracy and Justice,” is orchestrating to instigate violence and protest in the country. However, he said I would like the party to know that there is a price to pay.

“We would like to make it clear that the opposition cannot go long by being a cover of anti-peace elements,” he added.

Ethiopia to build new dam

Ethiopia is all set to build The Great Millennium Dam with an investment of about 4.8 billion USD. Meles Zenawi, the Prime Minister had laid the foundation stone for the project on April 2nd 2011. The government of Ethiopia has been involving huge support for the development of hydro power from last 10 years with the help of its natural resources and this is not the only thing required to support the economic growth and improve the industry but even contribute for GDP.

There are 2 major reasons involved in such investment here as there are sufficient power energy demands and there is a support to use the income generating possibilities of water resource in the country. The water potential is expected to be 74 billion cubic meters in the country and it is estimated to produce around 73,707 mw of Electric power.

The Tekeze, Tana Beles and Gilegel Ghibe II Power generating stations started their operation by producing about 1000 mw electric power and later Gibe II used discharged water by the Gibe I through 26 kilometers tunnel that was developed under the Fofa Mountain generating about 420 mw. Ethiopia is planning to to build largest dam on Nile River which has also raised many issues. But this can also help to reduce the electric power shortages in the neighboring countries and all Ethiopians must contribute for the development of this huge project.

During the last 10 years, the Ethiopian government has used a lot of efforts for the development of hydro power production and it has been bold till now that the country is heading correctly to achieve it target. The Gilgel Gibe Hydroelectric facilities with a capacity of 180 MW and Gojeb with 150 MW started their operation during the year 2004. The investment made by the Ethiopian government in this sector has been supporting to increase the facilities.

Melez is being overconfident. He has no intention or at least pretends he is not interested in remaining in power past this term. He may go out in a final blaze but i welcome any escalation of hostilities between Meles and Isaias.

The details are Somalia and Ethiopian governments were overthrown the same year by rebels that they supported against one another, the difference is the TPL( Tigre Liberation Front) when they Captured Capital Addis Ababa, despite their differences they immediately made compromise with other rebels and changed their name to EPRDF(Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front) and Ethiopia become the fastest growing nation of East Africa by Modernizing their education and Medical facilities with American money, Building Biggest Airport and High ways with Saudi Money, investing mining and oil exploration with Chinese and Malaysian Money, and expanding agriculture and Hydroelectric power with European money.

Very soon Ethiopia will sell Electricity to neighboring countries and start exporting other goods also. After 20 years Meles is still the president of Ethiopia even though he accused his predecessor Mengistu was a dictator that only ruled Ethiopia for 12 years.

While on the other Hand Somali rebels that came to the Capital turned into Mayhem and ate the infrastructure that left behind the government, uprooting phone and power lines , tearing down factories for scab metal, settling Hospitals and public schools as Homes and many other types of Mooryaanism. In the northern rebel instead of reaching the southern rebels they locked themselves in their towns and declared independent from Somalia that did not get recognized in the world till today.

While Mogadishu and Hargeysa were looking down Addis Ababa in the 1970s and 1980s today not only they look up to Addis Ababa but they also take direct orders from Addis Ababa, in the upcoming IGAD conference in Nairobi Somalia will further fracture into mini small federated countries that hate each other, every district in Somalia is adding to its name the word land or State which its latest one was declared two weeks ago (Awdal State) prior to that (Azania) was the talk of the town and there are more on the way. So it is clear that this century Ethiopia won and Somalia lost.

Politicians are something else. By the way I would not be surprised if Ethiopia invaded Eritrea. They want to capture and occupy one of their southern ports. That information was leaked out awhile back. I believe the west will also back Ethiopia in this move.

It doesn't matter what the West will do, the reality is Eritrea is a perpetual military state. Ethiopia thought it could take it on back in 1998 and the whole world knows the result. I doubt Ethiopia is going to risk conventional war with Eritrea in this time with internal rebellion, advanced friction with Egypt, and a political situation inside Addis that can spiral out of Zenewi's control as fast as you can say "go".
