Dear Shaykh,

Is the theory of Evolution compatible with Islam?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Thank you for this question. First I will start off by saying that I have heard many times Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (qs) and Mawlana Shaykh Hisham (qs) rejecting the idea that humans are derived from an ape-like ancestor.

In the Qur’an it is mentioned that Adam (as) and Hawa (as) were sent down onto earth as a consequence of their transgression in the Heavens. This certainly contradicts the notion that there is a prototypical organism that all entities, including humans are derived from.

In Surah 4 verse 1 it is also mentioned:

يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفۡسٍ۬ وَٲحِدَةٍ۬ وَخَلَقَ مِنۡہَا زَوۡجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنۡہُمَا رِجَالاً۬ كَثِيرً۬ا وَنِسَآءً۬‌ۚ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِى تَسَآءَلُونَ بِهِۦ وَٱلۡأَرۡحَامَ‌ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ رَقِيبً۬ا

{O men! Fear your Lord Who created you from a single being and out of it created its mate; and out of the two spread many men and women.} Surat an-Nisa’ 4:1

This verse clearly refers to Adam (as) and Hawa (as) and precludes the idea that there was an ancestor for them.

Also, the belief in random mutation and the resulting natural selection and evolution is un-Islamic in the sense that Allah (swt) is the Cause of every smallest occurrence so there is no randomness. If one acknowledges that Allah (swt) is the Cause of everything, and that He has created mutations which may allow a certain species to more successfully pass on its genes, then this shouldn’t be considered un-Islamic.

This man instead of issuing hot air fatwas needs to explain the evidence that supports species evolution or his opinions will be thrown in the garbage heap.
