That's tight: Boys are banned from wearing 'skinny-fit' trousers to school

By Daily Mail Reporter

18th May 2011

'Skinny-fit' trousers have been banned from lessons at a school because they are too tight-fitting.
Teachers at Downlands Community School, Hassocks, West Sussex, banned the fashion items worn by celebrities such as Russell Brand, after pupils started wearing them in the classroom.
The school had previously warned girls about wearing tight trousers, but it had never before had to discipline the boys.

The school said in a statement: 'A small number of boys have been warned for wearing trousers which are tapered below the knee, 'skinny' fit or jean-style trousers with rear patch pockets.
'It is not all the boys, just a small number of them. It is a school of more than 1,000 pupils - so they are a minority.
'However, these sort of trousers are unacceptable as they are a fashion trend and not standard uniform trousers.
'Trousers should be 'straight leg' with no tapering below the knee, with a rear concealed pocket and in standard uniform fabric.
'Only trousers which can be bought from our suppliers or are a match will be approved by the school. We expect pupils to wear suitable uniform. Most schools have a code of conduct.'
The ban follows the antics of Chris Whitehead, 12, who wore a skirt to lessons at Impington Village College, Cambs, in protest at not being allowed to wear shorts.
Meanwhile at Shoreham College, West Sussex, earlier this year girls were stopped from wearing bras that could be seen under their school shirts.

Retired school administrator Alberta Wreedon, from Chichester, West Sussex, defended the school's decision saying: 'School uniforms should not be negotiable, everyone should dress the same. That is the whole point of a uniform.
'The school is quite right to be firm on this, because making sure pupils are dressed properly is the first step towards getting them to behave properly.'
