The modernasation of the culture and the mindset of Somalis

Post by Coeus »

I want to create a special thread today, where me and my fellow Somalis can discuss our tradition and culture. So that we can hopefully pinpoint those aspects of our culture or sometimes "mindset" that slows down the Somali instead of Uplifting. Of course we are not only going to mention bad Qualities, but also good qualities. There is some aspects of Somali tradition and culture that is compatible with building a free and progressing society, just as it was many centuries ago. While some are not.

I can start with my own observation.

Khat

Although this drug was presented to Somalis the beggining of 1900, it still can be inclusive into Somali culture because of the status of the "khat" in Somalia today.
Khat consumption induces mild euphoria and excitement. Individuals become very talkative under the influence of the drug.
Those who abuse the drug generally cannot stay without it for more than 4–5 days without feeling tired and having difficulty concentrating. Some researchers also say that khat is “an amphetamine-like substance”, and those who use it are more likely to develop mental illnesses.
Withdrawal symptoms that may follow occasional use include mild depression and irritability. Withdrawal symptoms that may follow prolonged khat use include lethargy, mild depression, nightmares, and slight tremor. Khat is an effective anorectic (causes loss of appetite).
Now this is one aspect of Somali culture that is not compatible with a free and healthy society whom is gonna be sustainable in Somalia.
