African Union Calls for End to NATO Strikes on Libya
African Union Calls for End to NATO Strikes on Libya
Alliance Says NATO Strikes Go Beyond UN Mandate
An African Union summit in Ethiopia ended with a call for NATO to halt all air strikes against Libyan territory. The AU Peace and Security Commissioner insisted that the strikes are going far beyond the UN mandate 1973 and are necessary to reach a political solution.
The African Union had previously tried to broker a transition deal in Libya which would lead to free elections and the ouster of Moammar Gadhafi. The Gadhafi regime even endorsed the deal, but it was halted by rebel opposition, stemming from the belief that NATO would eventually help them win the war without a negotiated settlement.
Indeed AU chief Jean Ping accused unspecified international players (presumably NATO members) of deliberately undermining the talks, saying that the nations were trying to leave the AU in “observer” status in the war.
The US once again rejected calls for a ceasefire today, vowing that the war would continue and saying that the calls were insincere. The Gadhafi government has reiterated its support for the AU talks.

Basra,
They worry about the Republic and where it is heading. Endless wars, empire building, rich getting richer, poor gets poorer, etc. Those 3 gentlemen being anti-government? How do they get elected in the US Congress if they are anti-government?

Re: African Union Calls for End to NATO Strikes on Libya
Dennis Kucinich supports universal healthcare for all, permanent end to all foreign wars, money saved from useless war be spend locally, free education for all without the poor being end up in huge debt by the time they graduate; rights of minorities should be continuously respected; all of the labour laws be effectively enforced and unions should always represent the interest of the employees; multiple parties and just two parties which are equivelent to dictatorship. Most importantly, he wants private money out of the US elections. All politicians should have access to the same coverage and no more one politician getting hundreds of millions of dollars from IRA, AIPAC, and other lobby groups. Basically, what the man is telling Americans is the restoration of an independent USA.Basra- wrote:udun
