Westerners are using this term freely nowadays to label some muslims.

I do not understand why the west is carving up muslims in different categories like "fundamentalists, moderates, liberal etc.

Im a muslim and end of it.

Modern muslim is some one who's muslim by religion but kufr by lifestyle

Moderate Muslim means "adjusting your religion to fit into the environment around you". I once quoted a sheik who said ""In the Kitab it says nacalatualah cala nasar wal yuhuud but you'll never hear a moderate Muslim utter those words".

The funniest of all is "non practicing Muslims" like Fareed Zakaria of CNN

Islam teaches us to be balanced and moderate in itself means balance.

Islam is a moderate religion I think you guys are confused about moderate and modern (modern muslim are western muslim and adopt their lifestyle) because Islam is neither the far left or far right look at this Hadith. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately. . .Always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course, whereby you will reach your target (of paradise)." - Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Hadith 470
