Ethiopia buys over 200 tanks from Ukraine for $100 million

Ukrspecexport Ukraine’s arms exporter and the Ethiopian Ministry of Defense have signed a $100 million contract for Ukraine to Supply over 200 T-72 tanks.

Even though the details of the contract are not known, Ukrspecexport said that the tanks “are equipped with modernized propulsion, guided weapons and a reactive armor system.” Ukraine has been one of the biggest arms sellers to the Horn of Africa over the years.

The company disclosed that this contract with the Ethiopian ministry of Defense was one of the eight largest deals concluded by Ukrspecexport in the past fifteen years. Ethiopian government has been working on modernizing the Ethiopian Defense forces.

Recently the Ethiopian prime minister said his country has changed its policy towards Eritrea from passive defense to active offence if provocation continues by the leadershiop of its tiny neighbor.Halafi Mengedi

Pirates are the only group in Somalia with the budget to buy that kind of equipment. In fact, pirates accrued enough ransom money in 2008 alone ($130 million) to buy the 200 tanks themselves.

waryaa, your average RPG-7 that is common in somalia will have zero effect on reactive armour.
Even 2nd generation guided missles like the TOW, MILAN or SAGGER will not make a dent..

You will need another tank gun, or 3rd generation ATGM such as russian kornets or the chinese equivalent..
and the russians came up with the replacement for the venerable RPG-7 the RPG-29..

by having a tandem warhead, where one sets of the reactive armour, while the other one penetrates you can seriously mess up a tank
and a T-72 is very lightly armoured compared to other tanks..

ATGM are a thing of the past even though TOW 2 and other similar weapons can do wonders. If you want to really destroy tanks, there's nothing that comes to close to the awesome destruction of Depleted Uranium Rounds. These weapons will literally make tanks melt as they pierce the way thru the tank armor befor exploding inside. But not many country have these, I remember folks saying that the Pakistani production of DU rounds was the most significant development since their production of Nuclear Weapons. Of course, Land Attack Cruise Missile (LACM) such as the BABUR LACM have since surpassed that.

4rth gen ATGM's such as isreali spike and the javelin are are interesting..
one round costs at least $50,000 but it has a gaurenteed kill against a T-72 in this case costing $500,000.

That's true. Not anyone can buy DU rounds.

Traditional ATGM are still something to reckon with. The Pakistani supplied Bakhtar Shikan ATGM to Bosnian Muslims utterly devastated Serbian T-72 Tanks.
