Mother falls asleep while breastfeeding after drinking bottle of wine... and wakes to find her baby dead'You have killed my baby', husband was heard shouting by neighbour

By Daily Mail Reporter

22nd June 2011

A distraught mother has told an inquest how she fell asleep while breastfeeding after drinking heavily - and woke to find her baby had died.

Emma Hector, 30, had drunk almost a whole bottle of white wine on an empty stomach when she fed seven-month-old Naomi Rose while lying on a bed.

Her husband Allen, 42, found the infant's lifeless body, lying in a foetal position facing his wife, in the early hours of June 30, 2009.

The inquest at Bolton Coroner's Court heard that when Mr Hector discovered them, his wife's breast was covering Naomi's face and the baby had blood in her mouth.
Mrs Hector, who has two other children - one born after Naomi's death - said she had not eaten all day due to anxiety over a forthcoming appointment with Social Services.
The inquest heard the housewife, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, had drunk just under a bottle of wine at around 6pm on the evening of Naomi's death.
She was initially arrested on suspicion of over-lay - accidentally suffocating a child while asleep - but charges were dropped after pathologists were unable to prove Naomi's death was caused by her actions.

Mrs Hector cried as she gave evidence at the inquest.

She said: 'It is awful what has happened and I am not proud of my behaviour.

'No mother should be drinking at all. Since that day I have not taken one drop of alcohol.

'I should have been 100 per cent sober and that is what I have to live with. It has happened and I believe I have failed completely because I am her mum.'

A neighbour, Sheila Bentley, heard Mr Hector shouting, 'You have killed my baby' just before midnight and ran into their house.

She tried to resuscitate Naomi with Mrs Hector until paramedics arrived. Naomi was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital but staff were unable to revive her.

Forensic scientist Brian Johnson estimated from a blood test taken from Mrs Hector that she would have been around two-and-a-half times over the legal drink driving limit when the baby died.

Bolton coroner Jennifer Leeming recorded a narrative verdict and urged people to realise the risks involved in allowing a baby to sleep in its parents' bed.

Mrs Leeming said: 'Out of this tragedy the positive thing we can do is try to make people aware of the risks. Mr and Mrs Hector were by no means alone in taking a child into bed.'

Following his daughter's inquest, Mr Hector, an energy consultant, said: 'It has been a nightmare but hopefully something good can come of this if it can help another child.'

Health bosses have also warned parents against falling asleep with their baby.

A spokesman for NHS Bolton said, 'There is no advice which can guarantee the prevention of sudden infant deaths but there are a number of things parents and carers can do to reduce the risk to their baby.
'The safest place for a baby to sleep for the first six months is in a cot, Moses basket or crib in their parents' room and it is dangerous for a baby to sleep in a normal bed or on a sofa or armchair.'
