I think this might be what they call "malmal" (type of frankincense) which is kind of like uunsi (myrrah but the malmal doesn't have a scent). Anytime someone is going to Africa that we know, my grandma has someone send a bag full of "malmal" with them for her. Now growing up, anytime I had an injury or swelling she would tell me to put the ice pack down and would make a paste from her stack of malmal and rub it on me. The stuff would dry up quickly and I would have it on for at least a day. I always thought it was some joke traditional medicine stuff but I would never refuse it because I didn't want to hurt her feelings.Somalia might be one of the most unstable countries in the world. But its traditional medicine has something to teach us, it looks like.
Welsh scientists say that they learnt from the Somalis that frankincense could be used to alleviate arthritic pain.

The Cardiff scientists believe they have been able to demonstrate that treatment with an extract of Boswellia frereana – a rare frankincense species – inhibits the production of key inflammatory molecules which helps prevent the breakdown of the cartilage tissue which causes the condition.

I just had deja vu reading this article because I think what they are talking about is exactly "malmal", a type of frankincense, which my grandma used for the same purpose these scientist now proof it helps with.
