Mental Illness?

Post by SultanOrder »

How prevalent is it in our community. What is the best course of action to take. And how do we overcome our natural bias and ignorance to it and those who are affected by it.

Mental illness is a vague term. Where's the range? Anything from "depression" to the most dramatic and dangerous forms can fall under this heading.

I think mental illnesses of all sorts are commonly viewed as "contagious", not literally, but that is the sense when you see average people treat those suffering from it. Most of us are shun ourselves into secrecy if we find we're showing symptoms. It's a shame it will only fester and worsen.

Every family in the UK has or will have close encounters with "mental illness".

On one hand there is fear of the stigma associated with acknowledgement of the illness on the other there is fear addmission of a loved one into an institution will render them permanently worse off. There are cases that need medical intervention however families choose to accept the jin and possession theory.

I think Sheiks need to be more responsible and there are some that are honest enough to say that a particular case warrants medical intervention or evaluation at least.

Any Sheik who charges for his service should be avoided in the first place.

Well said.. is sad walahi that Somalis continue to ignore this major issue in our community. I lost count of how many youth I know who are affected by mental illness today. Here in Toronto you hear it all the time remember, so and so he or she went crazy.. May Allah protect us, Amiin

Mental illness is very common among all not just Somalis..
1 in 4 will some stage in their life get it.. :|

It ranges from depression, anxiety to psychosis and schizophrenia!

The problem with Somalis is that they try to ignore the problem and use 'jiin' as an excuse.. What they fail to understand is most *if not all* mental illnesses can be prevented/cured/treated *whatever* if they are diagnosed at an early stage! But Somalis hide it, as they see it as something 'ceeb'

We also have the problem of thinking Quran will cure mental illness. If you have diabetes would you read the Quran each time you have a meal or would you take your insulin?

We don't understand mental illness. People somehow associate it with low imaan though I don't know where that evidence comes from.
