The grammar of Af Somaali

Post by BlackVelvet »

It hit me a few weeks ago that in af Somali nouns have gender. In all my years it never once occurred to me.

Waan is raaceynaa - Can you take this sentence and analyse the grammar of it?

It translates

We will go together - We; pronoun in first person plural, will; modal verb, go; verb, together; adverb

Tutaenda pamoja - Tu; plural, ta; future, enda; to go verb, pamoja; together, adverb as above

Kiswahili peeps, you remember learning about verbs and "kufanya" - kufanya, kufanyiwa, kufanyana, kufanyafanya ( still makes me laugh)

The ones that used to confuse me and still does is the sentences that sound like they are incorrect when infact they are such as:

"dhegta qoriga ii sudhan" when to me the correct way would be like "qoriga dhegta ii sudhan" - the gun on my shoulder :?

also I know that words ending with a "ga" are masculine and words ending with a "da" feminine but then there are loads of words that are vice versa. :?

btw, BV I have no idea what you are talking about so forgive my thread hijacking :hijack:

War sentences are not masculine or feminine, nouns are.

The sentence I gave; Waa is the pronoun and raaceynaa is "raac" which is the verb and other stuff but what is "is"?

Anywho it was just an example to point out the lack of sturcture or rather my lack of understanding of the structure.

Dude that translates to "the gun hanging on my ear" I am sure guns don't hang off of ears

"dhegta qoriga ii sudhan" this on the other hand is talking about the trigger bit which I suppose is called the "dheg" of the gun.

You haven't hijacked it, it's what I am talking about. Knowing the structure and why you say something how you say it.
