Beira, Somaliland.We had some excellent looks at a small group of six Beira.

Desert Warthog, Somaliland.Desert Warthogs were easy to see during the trip and were a Birdquest mammal tick!

Seen from the coastal desert the lush escarpment at Daallo rises to over 2000 metres.

Bruce's Green Pigeon, Somaliland.Bruce's Green Pigeons were gorging themselves on figs on the Daallo escarpment.

Archer's Buzzard, Somaliland.We managed only three sightings of this apparently rare raptor in the Daallo area.

Brown-rumped Seedeater, Somaliland.Brown-rumped Seedeaters were common in the Daallo Forests and also near Shiikh.

Rabshie or Maydh Island lies some 13 km offshore and is covered with huge numbers of Bridled and Sooty Terns, Masked Booby and a few Red-billed Tropicbirds.

Brown Noddy, Somaliland.Brown Noddies were also breeding on Rabshie Island.

Bridled Terns were amazingly numerous and a visit to their colonies on Rabshie Island was a fantastic experience.

Crowned Lapwing, Somaliland.This juvenile Crowned Plover or Lapwing was photographed near Ceerigaabo but the species was commonly seen on the plains.

Salt's Dikdik, Somaliland. The endearing little Salt's Dikdik was amazingly common.

Shining Sunbird, Somaliland.The gorgeous Shining Sunbird was refreshingly common throughout the tour.

Pygmy Falcon, Somaliland.A male Pygmy Falcon atop an acacia in the red sand country.

Little Owls, Somaliland. Little Owls make their home in the sometimes enormous termite mounds in the red sand country.

Common Jackal, Somaliland.We had numerous sightings of Common or Golden Jackals in Somaliland.

Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse, Somaliland. Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse sheltering from the sun near Zeila.

Eastern Chanting Goshawk, Somaliland.Eastern Chanting Goshawks were probably the most numerous raptor seen during the trip.

Hooded Vulture, Somaliland.Hooded Vultures were only common in Hargeisa where they were the garbage disposal team.

Donaldson Smith's Nightjar, Somaliland.One of a pair of Donaldson Smith's Nightjars seen in broad daylight southeast of Burco.

Hemprich's Hornbill, Somaliland.Hemprich's Hornbills were conspicuous birds of the Daallo Escarpment.

Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Somaliland.Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse coming down to drink on the Ban Cade Plains.

Black-headed Heron, Somaliland.The Black-headed Heron is at home well away from water.

Black-chested Snake Eagle, Somaliland.We saw very few Black-chested Snake Eagles but this one posed nicely for us as it warmed itself in the early morning sun.

Aardwolf, Somaliland.A young Aaardwolf in its fox hole on the Qoyladey(Qolcaday-Sallaxley) Plains.

The Aroori Plains(southwest of Burco) as with many of the others are heavily grazed by sheep and goats.
