Meeting The Inlaws

Post by Murax »

This Weekend I am meeting My inlaws (formerly) for the first time or what they call the 'doonataan' in Soomali. Going with My Dad, Uncles, and other extended relatives to the girl's house to formerly ask for Her hand from Her Dad. Like 50 million of Her relatives are gonna be there too and theres gonna be like a big qado at their house. I'm noticing wierd stuff in this process like The sooriyo money is gonna be put on like a big cimmamad, and people who arn't part of either families are showing up anyway. It seems like all these odayaal waaweyn are gonna be having discussions right in front of Me, and I'm just gonna be a useless ornament. Anyone know what this process is like or is there anything I should do? My Mom told Me do what You're good at, just sit there and be quiet until its over

Sit there, stroke your beard every now and then and listen to the old men stories and jokes.

It's very easy process!

oh by the way all the women would be peeping from the window to get a glimpse of you, just act normal and let the ladies stalk in peace.

Why go through all that hassle? Go to the girl's dad by yourself (this is also too much but it's out of respect & to please your girl) and ask for his daughter's hand, intaad gacanta ku dhegto albaabka kala deg. End of madax-xanuun & sheeko sheeko.

Good luck man. My advice is to try and stay as quiet as possible, i.e. only talk when spoken to.

The soo doonis (spelling?) has become almost as big as the meher man  , I don't know how this creeped in.

Let us know how it goes inshallah.

The Somali way is a silly way, brother-man.

Out of respect (and to get baraka for the foundation of a new family) all you have to deal with should be the girl's immediate family.

Soo doonis is commercialized; that's the problem.

And it's one of the reasons our marriages do not have baraka anymore.

Waa isku soo bood iyo (after few weeks/months) kala bood.
