Suicide Bombers Attack AMISOM Base in Mogadishu


Two African Union peacekeeping (AMISOM) soldiers were killed and three others were wounded late Monday afternoon after two al-Shabaab suicide bombers attacked an African Union (AU) base in Mogadishu's Hamar Bile neighborhood, AMISOM Spokesman Lt Col Paddy Akunda told Somalia Report.

Mr. Akunda said that two al-Shabaab fighters dressed in Somali military uniforms attempted to blow themselves up among the soldiers, but were prevented from carrying out the attack by soldiers who opened fire on them.

“They tried to carry out a suicide attack but our soldiers shot them dead and, as a result, their explosives went off and two of our soldiers were killed and three others were wounded,” he said. “They were dressed in Somali military uniforms.”

Al-Shabab Spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage told pro-al-Shabaab Radio Andulus that they had killed more than claimed by AMISOM.

“Our holy warriors attacked the crusaders’ base in Hamar Bile and shot dead three Americans and eight African crusaders,” he added.

Residents in Hamar Bile neighborhood confirmed the attack but said 5 AU forces were killed by the blasts.

“Two men dressed in Somali government uniform attacked the African Union forces and killed five soldiers and the attackers were killed in the ensuing gunfire,” a resident who gave his name as Hassan told Somalia Report.

Mr. Akunda called people to be vigilant and vowed to continue their military campaign against al-Shabaab until they flush them from the Somali capital.

“We will continue our operations to ensure that displaced people under al-Shabaab controlled areas get the humanitarian aid which they have been denied,” he told Somalia Report.

Lt Col Akunda explained they have no tolerance for such acts.

“The extremists are using desperate measures to achieve their ends through their willingness to use brutal violence during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Make no mistake, we will not allow this sort of terrorism to succeed," he said in a press release today.

The attack comes as planned, according to al-Shabaab, which vowed to conduct an extensive military offensive during the holy month of Ramadan. The militants wasted little time as Ramadan began today.

A sources close to the TFG told Somalia Report that a Scandinavian was also among those killed, however, Mr. Akunda told our correspondent that he had no knowledge of any Western causalities.

The same sources said a South African was shot and wounded in Mogadishu, but is expected to recover. It is unclear if this was related to the suicide attack.
