Does Qaw/Bender Ziyaada town even exist?

Post by Monk-of-Mogadishu »

On every detailed map of Somalia and Bari in specific, there is no sign of any town between Ceelaayo and Bosaso (Where "Qaw" should be). There's only a mere 10km between Ceelaayo and Bosaso. The Puntland Marine base is located in "Bender Ziyaada/Qaw" but if you open google earth there is no structure outside the base. If you go south of the base there's nothing, if you go east you hit Bender Qassim Airport, if you go west you'll eventually roll on until you reach Ceelaayo, and by that point you're pretty much in Sanaag. There is one lonesome structure near an amateur road, a house or cabin, directly between Bosaso's airport and the Marine base, but there's no path to it. I hope a single house isn't all that Wabeeneeye have accomplished in all those years of "Qaw Town" hype.

Explain.

It is located on 11°14'32.34"N 48°58'35.49"E

It wasn't included in the 2011 Bosaso satellite image (it still dates to 2004). The town was largely abandoned for settlement in Bosaso, they only started reconstructing the town somewhere in the late 2000s (around '08-10).

I'm aware that there was a high chance that it was left out of the Bosaso update, which hardly went past the base (which is supposedly in the vicinity of Qaw).

The coordinates you gave me pointed me to one abandoned structure (a large one) and to the northeast of it seems to be a bright structure, likely a mosque or a tomb. I've been hearing about Qaw since 2003 - its strange that they'd wait until 2008 to start building, I think it really is hype. I've seen photos/documentation that there's been an attempt to reestablish settlement there but its a far cry from the expectations -- at best Qaw today is no more than two dozen structures in a poorly coordinated fashion. I will give them credit in that they have established a very advanced agricultural system and superb landscaping, and I've seen what looks to be some small administrative offices in pictures. I think the community effort to rebuild the town is commendable but they've undershot expectations---many of us were left with the impression that this would be a "model" city.

I wonder whose tomb this is? Could it be Majerteen's? (location: 11°14'41.30"N 48°58'49.68"E)

sxb Bender Ziyaada, QAW does exist and it is growing but slowly, from what my uncle who went there told me qaw has got an cooler wheather then bossaso, a valley runs thru it providing water recources, many projects including a naval&agriculture are taking place, and land grabs began long time ago by diapora.

now the problem is that the 'Wabeeneeye' ppl who are the natives have been migrating from this town in large numbers liturally for centuries unlike thier kins who stay in thier native towns. Why? i don't know and i don't trust somali tales i thk its got something to do with conquering new lands or sumting like that.

neways from what i heard, many Wabeeneeye 's living in london, nairobi, kampala, atl and even once spread throughout somali regions are all eager to invest and rebiuld their town and many have already started but you need to cool down mate these ppl have only started now and it takes time to rebiuld and re-populate a town.

Dude, all PLers are rooting for Wabeeneeye in their Qaw project. I have already posted some agricultural developments in the own. But right now we are not seeing much. I hope they continue the work and succeed, it will be another piece of prideful achievement for PL.

Monk, if i were you I'd create a Diaspora 4 Puntland kinda Page on Facebook, where you actually post the stuff you do here but on that page. Shit even others will join in and update about Puntland developments, most likely those in the homeland for various reasons with a decent camera. You'd get mad amount of members liking it and following it.

Just a thought.
