South Sudan has offered to send troops to join the African Union (AU) peacekeeping force in Somalia that backs the weak interim government.
The country, which became independent on 9 July, made the offer on the day it formally took its AU seat this week.
The AU has 9,000 troops in Somalia, but it says it needs up to 20,000 soldiers to repel the Islamist group, al-Shabaab.
Deng Alor Kuol, South Sudan's foreign affairs minister, said the new state was prepared to bolster the force to show its commitment to peace in Africa.
"It is part of our responsibility to help our Somali brothers and sisters to achieve peace," he said.
"We, as Africans, must be in the lead to alleviate problems before we ask the Western world, or anyone else, to come and help us."
Modern army?
Offering troops to international peacekeeping missions can be a good way of earning foreign currency for some countries.
An estimated 180,000 former rebel and militia fighters now make up South Sudan's army.

ufff
Another reason to dislike south sudan
They should think about their new country first. I predict they will have unrest in their country soon when they realise the west just want their resources and nothing else.

I also think they are going too fast, do they think other countries in Africa that have refused to send troops are foolish?? they should calm down and rebuild themselves for 30 years first, they should not even think of firing gun after all they have been through, i have realized countries with an experience of war and conflict never settle down, Uganda,Burundi Sudan,Ethiopia, Eritrea. now look at Kenya, Djibouti and Tanzania very peaceful never been to any warXaliimoFarax wrote:ufff

You dont understand where they are comming from..
this is actually quite smart on their part.
they have 180,000 + troops that they need to demobilize a large amount of.
why not hit 2 birds with one stone.
send a few thousand to somalia, they will be from the more experienced and elite (what counts for elite forces in this giant millitia). The salary they get from the west and UN will cover their own salaries plus the costs of demobilizing 50,000 troops back home. and they also get free training and equipment from the private millitary companies training the Amisom.

that is one of the largest armies in Africa, even for a former rebel group its huge. now i understand, this to them is more of a business venture. but i reckon in future south Sudan will be a belligerent nation to its neighborsgurey25 wrote: they have 180,000 + troops that they need to demobilize a large amount of.

Re: SOUTH SUDAN TO SEND TROOPS TO SOMALIA TO HELP AMISOM
meru dont worry its a glorified millitia, not an army
its just that they are good at guerilla warfare and the Sudanese government was grossly incompetent.
if you armed every able bodied kenyan, you will get an millitia of over 2 million.

More African troops to Somalia?
We might as well just send Somali women in boxes to Kampala, Kigali and now Juba.

Re: SOUTH SUDAN TO SEND TROOPS TO SOMALIA TO HELP AMISOM
the best Friend Somalia will ever have is Kenya, and you all know that, we stand to gain nothing from Somalia woes. Kenya we have capacity to arm our military without using tricks.Uganda arming is a threat to us. museveni dream is to be the president of East Africa by 2013, he envies Kenya alot and am sure part of his involvement in Somalia is to train and harden his forces in readiness to fulfill his dream, but gumboot wearing uganda soldier with a few body Armour donated by UN is no match for the superior Kenyan soldier. just look at our anti riot kenyan police, then you think of what the kenyan soldier carries into battleXaliimoFarax wrote: How come Kenya is not getting it's share as well?
