Police forces of Somalia's Transitional Federal Government seized explosive devices and captured three al-Shabaab fighters who were hiding in Dharkinlley district of Mogadishu on Wednesday, thanks to a tip from local residents.
The chairman of Dharkinlley district, Mo’alim Abdulle, said that the residents of the district informed the police that the apprehended men were planning to threaten the stability of the district.
“The people of this district cooperate with the police and that is why al-Shabaab can’t do anything here,” he told Somalia Report. “The residents called the police and we immediately answered their call and captured the men.”
The chairman said that one of the men confirmed that he is an al-Shabaab fighter.
“Two of them denied guilt, but the police have full evidence because they were carrying an explosive device,” he added. “We have done our responsibility and the last decision lies with the court.”
Dharkinlley district is one of the few districts in Mogadishu that al-Shabaab fighters have failed to seize over the last three years. On Monday night al-Shabaab insurgents attacked the district and claimed that they seized West police station.
